Transfer Case installation

I am finally to the point where I can start wrestling that beast of a transfer case into my truck. Any1 have any suggestions to an easy way to accomplish this?

Re: Transfer Case installation

You could fabricate a cradle to fit on a floor jack ---or have someone else push it up and in

Re: Transfer Case installation

I have the cross member that the case mounts to off of the truck, would I be able to put the case on that and jack it up in there and bolt the cross member to the mounts?

Re: Transfer Case installation

When I did mine I bolted the tranny, adapter, and t-case together on the ground. Then I used a cherry picker to set it on a tranny jack. I then used the jack to lift the assembly into the truck. Yes the crossmember has to be out of the way. This stuff weighs a lot so be careful.

I doubt it.I had to hit my crossmember with a big hammer to line it up in the holes after I removed it.I have the body off my truck so when I put my 205 t-case in last week I just grabbed hold and hoped I didn't drop it on my toe.If the motor isnt in....Don't put the transfer case and tranny in without supporting the front of the transmission.

Re: Transfer Case installation

I removed the tranny hump and used the engine hoist to lift the tranny and tcase together(I have a 465/205 combo). I didn't have much problem with my crossmember. The reinstall was definitely easier that removing it with a floor jack.

Re: Transfer Case installation

I made a cradle out of wood for my floor jack and with my son's help just jacked it up and slipped it in.

Re: Transfer Case installation

I actually used a ratchet strap to get it high enough to get floor jack under and presto.Sometimes you just gotta get creative.

Re: Transfer Case installation

Talk about creative and southern engenered. Years ago in Texas when I had no money and no jacks I had the seat and hump cover out, I tied a rope around the top of the cab and inside from window to window and droped a come-along through the floor and hoisted the t-case and 4 speed up as a unit. Worked well.
Hey when tools and money are at stake.....
Now I love my full blown shop.

Re: Transfer Case installation

This is a good thread; I am going to be dissecting my Rockwell next week... I have a floor jack, engine hoist, small floor dolly and random ratchet straps. Here's hoping it goes well/painless!!

Re: Transfer Case installation

I cheated I did it when the cab was off. Set the 700r4 first by hand and the the transfer case. Had to slide the motor and tranny up 1.5" hooked to the cherry picker.

I would find a friend and a good floor jack and be careful.
