Starter solenoid

Any tips on how to get to the starter solenoid without taking the exhaust pipe and starter out first? I have a '72 Chevy C20 Super Cheyenne. It looks like I have to get through those before I can switch out the solenoid, but I figured someone might have done it an easier way -- or with a special go-go-gadget solenoid-removing tool or whatever.

Thanks. I really don't want to have to remove all that just to switch out the solenoid!

Re: Starter solenoid

I've always just pulled the entire starter, shouldn't have to remove anything else.

Re: Starter solenoid

Same as Krue, drop the starter and change solonoid. I would think that it would be easier to work on the starter out of the truck.

How are your pipes installed that you have to remove them?

esll.

Re: Starter solenoid

If he still has the y-pipe he probably has to remove it. I had to take mine off when I did anything with the starter before I switched to duals.

Re: Starter solenoid

What problem are you having? Solenoids rarely go bad themselves. Usually it's a wiring problem or bad grounds. Heat soak is often blamed on the solenoids when the starter won't turn after the engine is warm. Tell us more and maybe we can help. VV

Exactly what you said: it doesn't turn over after it's been running for a while. And actually, lately, it won't turn over at all, so a buddy of mine figures the solenoid is finally dead. New battery, new starter, new alternator .. what could be going wrong, if it's not the solenoid??

Thanks for your suggestions.

Re: Starter solenoid

This is pretty common, as a matter of fact had the same issue with my 66' and then with my 71'. I finally purchased a remote solenoid and purchased a heat shield for my starter. I haven't had any problems since. I want to say the remote solenoid ran about $20-30.00 bucks, well worth it. I no longer cringe every time I turn the key.

Also, do a search for remote solenoid and you will find numerous install guides.

Cheers,
David

Re: Starter solenoid

Sounds to me like you finally burned out the starter motor trying to start it while it was dragging, or you burned up the wiring. Either way the starter would need to come down. If you have a voltmeter or a 12v test light see if you have voltage at the starter. If you do then try to jump out the solonoid and see if the starter will turn. When you are all done fixing the starter, check your ignition timing.

Re: Starter solenoid

I would recommend getting a remote starter solenoid regardless if you have to replace the starter. Saves yourself a lot of headaches in the long run.

Re: Starter solenoid

before throwing parts at it i'd suggest a piece of 80grit sandpaper and cleaning up the grounds to the frame and engine block
