Idea for a theft deturent system
classicchev and I were discussing different ways of starting a 67-72 w/o having to turn the key all the way to the start position,
What we came up with for my trucks bezel with the provision for a choke is to mount a windshield washer switch in the "choke" hole. So the process for starting the truck would be: 1) turn the key to the "on" position 2) push the windshield washer switch "In" (the one in the choke hole in the bezel) as if you were to operate the washer pump. And have this wired to the starter to "start" the truck So you would still have a key for security and a "pushbutton" starter. Any thoughts?? Maybe we're not as smart as we think we are??

Re: Idea for a theft deturent system
I may just wire a switch underneath the dash that disables something (lots of things to disable that won't let it start) and then I'd be the only one that would know about it.
If you use a washer pump as a switch, might want to think about using a relay in line with it to handle the amperage. |

Re: Idea for a theft deturent system
On another car I have I use a Moroso "dead man" switch. It kills all power to the car. I have it mounted under the seat. It's a simple set up. On the other hand, now a days, if they want it bad enough they'll come back with a wrecker.

Re: Idea for a theft deturent system
If a thief wants it bad enough, he will get it. Period.
BUT - he did say theft deterrent - so - no Deuce, this isn't a BAD idea. Takes more than a turn of the key to start the truck, so no simple switch breaking technique will work. DLB Last edited by Orange; 08-03-2007 at 09:33 AM. |

Re: Idea for a theft deturent system
I had a 1964 ChevyII station wagon that i hooked the heater switch up to the electric fuel pump. Living in socal we dont get to much cold weather and i only drove it during good weather so i didnt need a heater. I forgot to turn the pump on and i got about 1/4 mile away before it ran out of gas thats when i remembered to turn the pump on.

Re: Idea for a theft deturent system
So if I do this, when I turn the key all the way to the right will it clean my windshield?

Re: Idea for a theft deturent system
i did something similar few years ago on my old mustang, ran the starter hot wire through the cig lighter, i don't smoke but if the element isn't pushed in or not there it wouldn't complete the circuit.

Re: Idea for a theft deturent system
A main kill switch is a good idea. Just run the main hot to the switch first, before it goes into the cab. If the switch is off, everything is dead. The switch can be keyed as well. BTW, the switch can be mounted any where.

Re: Idea for a theft deturent system
I ran a hidden switch on my old Trans Am. It cut the ingition power lead to the HEI. So you could crank all you wanted to, and it wasn't going to start. Unless the switch was in the "on" position.

Re: Idea for a theft deturent system
A theft deterent is probably a good idea.Just think about it.A theif can carry a new switch set up and just unplug and plug in his switch, then he has a key.

Re: Idea for a theft deturent system
Get yourself one of those easy buttons, set it on the seat and wire up to a crazy loud siren or one of those sets of train horns. One click on, has to be turned off with a hidden toggle or something. Thief breaks into your ride, sits down on the seat and looks over "cool, an easy button"...NO ONE can resist pushing one of those easy buttons ...*click*... he sets of the alarm
