Where do you keep your spare tire?
Do you all keep a spare tire with your truck? If so do you use the factory spare tire set up? My truck as no jack or spare tire set up and was wondering if I need to find a good used tire jack and associated hardware.

Re: Where do you keep your spare tire?
Ive found, the only time I need my spare, is right after leaving it at home, or worse, after loaning it out.

Re: Where do you keep your spare tire?
What is a "spare tire"?
In the bed of my truck, I have a spare wheel (original) that has an OLD tire (8.25x15) on it. I guess you could call it a spare tire, but I don't. If I get to the point that I need to replace one of my tires, I'll replace two of them. Two of mine are seven years old and still blessed with plenty of tread. But I know they won't live forever. Yeah, it's getting close to time to shed the old skins and grow two new ones. It's in the bed.

I don't normally carry one unless I'm traveling 30 miles or more away from home. Then I just throw the tire and a plastic tub with the jack and tools in the bed.... LockDoc

Re: Where do you keep your spare tire?
I guess I am wondering if a spare tire is needed anymore. I get nervous when thinking about taking a trip with no spare tire.

Re: Where do you keep your spare tire?
I throw one in the back of the C-10 on a trip, and either just remove the flat if it's on the rear, or pull one off of the back and put it on the front when I'm in one of the C-30's or the wrecker!

Re: Where do you keep your spare tire?
I used to carry the spare in the bed (fabbed a bracket to hold it upright in the corner) so I could get it without crawling under the truck in the dirt or mud.
Never did need it, and it's under the rear of the bed again, in its original spot. Cell coverage around here is spotty at best...

Re: Where do you keep your spare tire?
Mine is hung in the factory location. Hopefully I will never have to deal with it. It gets pulled out every 2 weeks or so to check it for air/etc...
Truck mostly stays in town, and one phone call away from a good, reputable tow..

Re: Where do you keep your spare tire?
Thanks guys...
I think I will post a WTB in the parts section. I agree with the cell phone comment. Out this way it's hit or miss and if one has a blow out than a can of "fix-a-flat" won't do much good. My thinking is if I get a spare tire and have it handy...Murphy's Law is I will never need a spare!

Re: Where do you keep your spare tire?
Wonder about this myself... Mine has been out maybe twice, and that's in 30 years. It's an original 8-ply 7.50-16 on a split rim and weighs a ton. I check it about once a year -- without removing it.

Re: Where do you keep your spare tire?
Me I just keep the spare sitting in the bed. As for the small spare check out the chevy astro and gmc safari vans. They have the same bolt pattern as our trucks, at least the the five lug ones after about 93 or 94, supposably there was some oddball car lug ones before that. They come with a small doughnut spare. As for the oe jack. They are a pos. Get you a small trolley jack that fits in its own case. They usually also come with will chocks and other goodies.
Now as to not carrying a spare, you got to be kidding me. This is a serious pet pive of mine and safety issue. I never leave home without a spare and tools in any vehicle I own. Including the vans. I even usually bring spare parts to. I will not drive a vehicle without a spare. Last edited by Aarons72s; 09-24-2007 at 07:59 AM. |

Re: Where do you keep your spare tire?
i installed a spare tire winch from a '90's model gm truck under my bed. i don't carry the spare all the time, but when i need too i crank it up under the bed and it's there if i need it. it looks really clean when the tire is under the bed because you can't see any brackets ,etc. hanging from under the truck.http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/a...9&d=1144539521

Re: Where do you keep your spare tire?
I've got the factory spare held in by the factory hanger in the factory location. Bet it would be a real bear to get out if'n I needed it. Probably has not seen the light of day since the factory worker hung it up.

Re: Where do you keep your spare tire?
I have mine in the bed with the jack in the tool box. If i am running around town I sometimes pull it out and put it in the garage but i am never without a can of fix a flat with or without the spare.
