fuel tank relocation idea

Im sitting around pondering ideas for my project truck. I came up with one and thought i would throw it out there. Im probably going to end up with a fuel cell between the frame rails but ive got the fuel tank out of my 72 that is in great shape (didnt smell gas in the cab and has no rust). I came up with a wild idea of mounting that tank to the rear bed panel and fabbing up a cover panel that angled from the top of the rail down a few inches then follows the tank straight down to the bed to hide the tank or at least clean it up a bit. Except where the filler neck stuck out that would be flush with the fabbed up cover. Its hard to explain so im not sure if im getting the picture across or not. I havent done any measurements to see if its possible yet either. I was just looking for something "different". What do you think?

Re: fuel tank relocation idea

You mean near up against the panel that is closest to the cab? Then just sheet metal it it?

I havent seen that before ..... other then losing some bed space i like it!!

ya that was the idea that popped into my head while i was at work. Shape the sheet metal to look nice and if you werent going to use the bed to haul anything or much. I think it would take up less space then mounting a fuel cell on the floor of the bed.

Re: fuel tank relocation idea

I done that years ago with a '64 K20. I didn't get around to covering it up though. It was in the air on 38" Swampers, so you couldn't see it easily anyway. I'm thinking of doing it on my '72 K20 now, but with a cover like you describe, or maybe just put on a tonneau cover.
