500hp
so this is my first truck build and its an 86 swb. i just want to know what 500hp really feels like in these things....someone explain. my combo should be making about 500hp at the crank plus 125 shot for the track to give it 500hp at the wheels and alot of tq. oh yeah a 6sp manual and fully locked 4:10 gears

With a fully locked 4.10 gearset it is going to feel dangerous. I am hoping you mean a differential and not a spool. With that much power, you will be spinning the tires off with the stock leaf setup.
As for how it feels, that would be hard to describe, maybe over powered?

500 hp in a leaf spring truck is pretty harsh -- if it ever attempted to hook, the axle wrap would be severe and the tires would spin for days. That new Viper motored Dodge - the SRT-10 -- is only good for low 14's, high 13's in the 1/4 because of things like this
Most people with engines like that in these trucks just use them for cruising and rarely pour the coals to it-- probably would be a wise idea to hold off on the spray until you are out of the hole too--- but there is a company that makes custom slapper bars for these that tuck out of the way where you cant see them from the side, and work well I am assuming 500 corrected hp though, --- 500 uncorrected at the crank is more like 425 at the rear wheels, and that is a bit more "manageable". You didnt mention it, but is this a small block or a big block? There is a huge difference in torque too, between the two that will mean more in a seat-of-the-pants measurement than the net hp reading (big blocks feel faster, even if they're not--- i dont know the science behind that, but its true) Last edited by streetstar; 10-27-2007 at 11:17 AM. |

If it is locked it will definitly have wheel hop.

Caltracs are worth their weight in gold! I know of several cars and a couple of trucks that the only suspension mod was a set of Caltracs and some good shocks and are getting 1.50's at the 60 ft mark.

You can get sub 2.0 60ft with these easily. They are limited in adjustability, but they work. We are putting a set on my brother 2000 Silverado that is turbo'd.

here is the set up. first off i have a fully boxed frame with a custom made four link and coil overs. i have a fully built ford 9" rear with a lock rite locker and 4:10 gears. the rear is narrowed with 33 spline moser axels. its going to have a fully built t56 tranny with aluminum fly wheel and driveline.
now in front of all that is a fully built 10.6:1 small block 388 stroker. everything is blueprinted and port matched. forged internals when the project is all done i should be seeing about 500-520 hp at the crank. then on trck days im going to put 100hp nos shot in it. did i mention its tubbed and im running the mickey thompson s/r sportsman radials for the street. 29x15x20 on coys 20x14 in the rear and 18x8 up front |

Cal-tracs on my '73...can't wait to try them out. The install is super easy, and they have an awesome street/strip rep for their performance. Very well built too.

i will try and get some pics soon, its all in parts now, but i will see what i can do.
how does $4800 sound for the whole motor. not bad i think. i was hoping to hit the 11's on this set up, but who knows. yeah i will be running slicks at the track prolly a 29x16x15 or something like that. im hoping i will be able to get tire spin at close to 50mph, im gonna have to use some crappy tires for awhile to get the burnouts out of my system. i dont want to burn out $400's per tire |

I drove a new Z06 a little while back and let me tell you that it's dam scary at first. Its the kind of power you can get used to though.
It's going to pull hard if you can keep the wheels planted...

well it sounds like you have all the candy you need on the chassis ---- that kind of horsepower is on the ragged edge for most small blocks though--- i cant imagine it being much fun on the street (big c am, loose converters, no vacuum, etc etc)

That's odd, there was another post just after your last one that said that 500hp was the limit on a small block. Can't remember who posted it though.
I agree whole heartedly with you though. Forced induction is pretty much neccessary after 500 n/a hp
