Ever swapped from a diesel to gas???

They same guy I bought my 82swb from has a 80ish LWB 4x4 with a diesel.. The truck is actually very clean.. But someone just vandalized it.. Knocked the windshields out and headlights... He bought it with the diesel not running.. And I hate them anyways... He called me and said he wants this one gone.. I hate to see him crush it..... Its clean otherwise... Has anyone ever swapped from the diesel to a gas motor...either a 454 or SBC?? I could do either... Is the trans bolt pattern the same?? I think its a 700r4. Just woundering.. prolly get the truck for a few hundred.. If I don't do that I may stick the a/c, power window and locks, cab on my 76 SWB chassis and sell the nice box and 4x4 stuff. I dunno yet.

Re: Ever swapped from a diesel to gas???

1981 was the last year they put the Olds diesel in the trucks, which uses different engine mounts and has the BOP bell housing pattern, but I don't think it was used in 4WD's anyway. In 1982 they started using the 6.2 diesel which uses the same mounts and housing pattern as the SB/BB Chevy engines.

Re: Ever swapped from a diesel to gas???

just got off the phone with him... its an 84.. I can get the thing for somewhere around 200-400.... I was thinking, I might just part it out.. I would like to have the hydro brakes for my 82 and the cab to stick on my 76 chassis. I could sell the damn near perfect long box and all the 4x4 stuff. I'd prolly keep the trans. We will see. I do hate to distroy a good truck..

Re: Ever swapped from a diesel to gas???

The swap isnt tough to do, if you have the donor vehicle there its real easy. The Diesel 700s torque converters have a slightly different bolt pattern. I had to elongate the holes in the flexplate of my 454. The TV cable will either be too short or very long, the short ones come with a rod that ran under the intake manifold to the injector. You could make it work with some trail and error, but a new cable is better than the short one.

The coil wire plugs into the injector too, just plug it into the distributor on the BATT side of the cap. The rest is straight forward and easy to figure out. If you werent 1500 miles away I would take it off your hands...

Re: Ever swapped from a diesel to gas???

I had an olds diesel in my 81 and after it died i swapped to a 6.2 l diesel wich ran very strong and didn´t use to much fuel. Now i have a sbc 350 in because it looks so much better and is easier to handle and smells better! The change was not difficult because i had the truck completely apart and wired it all new.
Most other parts just bolt from one to the other!

The diesel auto trans governor will cause early upshifts behind a gas motor, so you should swap that out.

I had to get a new th350 tranny back in the days and didnt change anything´and last week i drove the gas engine (the first time after thirteen years) with that tranny and it shifted very smooth and seems to fit good to the gasenginecharacteristics! Is there a difference when ordering a tranny for a gas or a dieselengine?
I´m good with the one i got for the diesel!

Re: Ever swapped from a diesel to gas???

Well me and diesels don't get along, so if I build it, its going...If it shifts too soon... all you have to do is remove the governor, shave some weight off of it, and reinstall... Trail and error....BUT I prolly got a stock gas one somewhere around here.. Good point thought, I hadn't thought of that.. I don't have a donor vehicle, just an ass of acumulated parts. We will see, I think the paint will buff out even. If I get it....and find I have the heart for it.... I'm gonna build it.. its really a nice truck.. I just don't like long beds. If not....then a buddy of mine is gonna buy the bed and I am gonna use the cab and front clip on my 76 chassis... And sell the 4x4 chassis. Either way... Its should get built... BUT THIS IS GOING TO BE A BACK BURNER PROJECT FOR SURE..

Re: Ever swapped from a diesel to gas???

An Oldsmobile 403 would drop right in there as is. Just get the transmission worked over with regular shift points and maybe a shift kit and freshen up if it needs it. Oldsmobile 403's can be had very cheap.

Re: Ever swapped from a diesel to gas???

FYI TH350/400 use the same governor as the 700R4/4L60, so swapping them around is no big deal. Mine shifts right about where I want it to, even with the diesel governor. Its not a drag truck its a pullin truck. Otherwise yeah its a good idea to swap that with a different one.

Yeah I am sure I have one around here somewhere... If I end up using that trans and install a new motor behind it... I'll prolly out the trans and rebuild it.. I've gotten pretty good at building a 700r4/4l60e. BUT if I stick a ol used motor in it... I may swap the governor and leave it as is... that is if it shifts ok. THANKS FOR ALL THE INFO GUYS!
