396 into 67

I posted this on my build thread and had no takers. bad place to post as its a question not a progress report.

What do i need to do to put a 396 into a 67 4x4 frame with a 69 cab. SM420 tranny w/ 205 transfer?? Original engine was 327. After I get the floors in the original 67 cab I will put it back in, but that will be in a few years. Any suggestions. The 396 has headers, do I need to change those back to manifolds to make it fit. I'm new to chevy engine swaps. All I've done is ford engine swaps

Big block motor mounts, high hump tranny cover for cab, 4-core radiator and shroud and all the brackets and hardware for the engine. Oh bigger springs for the front end. Tranny will bolt right up but you will need a new torque converter.

No torque converter, he's using a SM420 tranny w/ 205 transfer. You can get a set of headers that will work, block huggers so they don't interfere with the z-bar. You may need to change your distributer to the smaller type HEI so it doesn't hit the firewall.

My bad...did not reread his post. The TC and flex plate would get in the way...LOL!

Are you sure it's a NP205? Sure it's not a Rockwell T221 t-case? Anway...4wds and big blocks..That swap is discussed alot..They don't mix too well but once it's all said and done you have a great 4wd..Use the stock motor crossmember,I'd run the manifolds for clearance but that's just me.If you run headers you will probably have to cut some of the top of the frame of in the engine bay.Also,there is z-bar issues when using headers on 4wds depending on what headers you use.Other problems--distributor hits the firewall,and the valve covers hit the firewall depending on what kind you use..You might move the motor forward 2" and move the t-case and tranny forward too for clearance.But then you will need to shorten the front d-shaft and lengthen the rear d-shaft though.

My shortbed 4X4 had a 396 with headers on it and didn't have to cut the frame. Call Summit Racing @ 1-800-230-3030 or 1-330-630-3030 and talk with a tech. Tell him what you are going to be doing. He will point you in the right direction. My project truck is getting a 427 with an M22 4-speed. He told me I would have to use a '73 & up z-bar so it wouldn't interfere with the headers. Like I said in my earlier post, if you use block hugger headers then you will not have an issue with the z-bar.

Jim,on the 67s the frame in the engine compartment was a little different,atleast on a 2wd.I assume 4wd is the same way.Even on 68-72 4wds some have to clearance the frame for headers though.

I dont like jumping in on others posts and steering it off a bit...BUT...have you posted pics or anything about this project? I would really like to see what you have going on.

Thanks for the advice. I traded my dad his 396 for my 327. The 396 has headers, but I have a set of manifolds laying around for it. If I use his motor mounts they should work right? I think I may have a different distributor lined up, maybe. I also should be able to take the tranny cover out of my 67 and put into the 69 maybe?

The project is in storage in Virginia while I am pulling a 3 year tour in Vienna, Austria. I have 20 months left before I can get back to my project.All the parts I bought are still in boxes, I have done my reserch and spent alot of time talking with the Summit Techs about what I'm doing and what I need to make everything work with my truck. Unfortunately the only pics I can gather are the disassembled pics and I would have to dig them up from all the pics I posted on here some time ago. Give me a couple days and I will show you what I have going on with it. I wish I was in the states working on it instead of 4800 miles away from all my family, friends, and vehicles.
