Bucket Seat Gas Tank Carpet

Looking for some information on how the gas tank carpet is attached in a bucket seat truck. I am adding factory bucket seats (72 style) and ordered the gas tank carpet. On the top of the carpet it appears that it attached to some type of metal strip on top. If anyone has a factory bucket seat truck let me know how your carpet attaches or better yet if you have pictures that would help also.

my carpet cover clips over the gas tank at top... like a little ridge piece that hooks over the tank.

Re: Bucket Seat Gas Tank Carpet

We just looked at a original 67 today with buddy buckets and has the carpet, it has fiber board under the carpet and its screwed to the back of the cab right above the top of the gas tank. I should be able to get a pic on Sun.

Re: Bucket Seat Gas Tank Carpet

Original should screw into the cab above the gas tank, not have the "clips" as the repop carpet does- these clips allow it to mount without drilling the holes. Orignals used a trim screw(screw with the recessed center washer) corners were visible and through the center the carpet was folded over so screws would not be seen. I will look and see if I have some pictures.

Here are a few pics of my very original 69 GMC Custom 1500 with the optional A50 bucket seats, the seats are original as is the carpeted fibre board tank cover. The top of the carpet cover is attached to the cab under the rear window with screws and the special slotted retaining clips (see last two pics), these pictured clips/screws were removed from a parted 71 cheyenne A50 truck. I have found this same type/looking carpet retaining clips & pan head phillips screws in a original 68 CST truck, I can also feel these same pan head screws & clips thru the folded edge of the tank cover carpet on my pictured 69. Re: Bucket Seat Gas Tank Carpet

More of a straight down and toward the corner shot, if you know what I mean. Kind of like if you looked into the open window and down into the corner, if possible. I picked up one of these carpets this summer and I am just not sure how the corners would have looked at the end of the carpet originally.

Thanks for posting those pics though.

This is an ancient thread, but since I'm kicking myself for having thrown the clips away by accident, here's a picture of what they looked like before being removed.

Could you use self tappers and a big flat washer. No its not original but I don't see why it would not work.

Re: Bucket Seat Gas Tank Carpet

I have been working ACC on getting factory correct bucket seat carpet cut. They have been enthusiastic to this point, so fingers crossed. The first step was finding a good original piece. Member Dirt's72 has generously offered up the tank carpet from his late 69 C20 Custom Camper (factory A50) built in Fremont. He took it out today and documented the process very well. Here are his pics that very nicely document the shape and the structure of the carpet. I don't know if the adhesive was from the factory but I suspect the zinc screws and washers may have been added later to reinforce the carpet...but I don't know. Thanks again Derrick for doing this!
