Anyone with a V6 motor????
Anyone with a V6 motor in their truck, if you still have the spid label on the glovebox, can you tell me what the code and what all its says on there about V6's, especially 67's. Mine has a 351 but don't know what the label says. Didn't know if there was a difference 305 or 351 on there. Thanks for any help, Randy

Re: Anyone with a V6 motor????
I have a '67 Custom Camper with a 351E, but there is no SPID on the door., It actually looks like there never on was one (original paint, no sticky glue and no discoloration?) If you are trying to the decode the engine, the best way to tell is on the pad on the front of the block under the fuel pump. It will have 305E or 351E stamped on there (including the E). If you wondering about the truck you have, it is defintely a 351, you can tell by the exhaust manifolds.

Re: Anyone with a V6 motor????
Thanks, yes I knew I had a 351. I think my glove box sounds like yours, doesn't look like anything ever on it. I was just curious if anyone else had anything on their spid. Thanks Randy

Re: Anyone with a V6 motor????
6 bangers were pretty much base model (not options) engines,so probably won't be on the SPID. They will be easy to pick out in the vin#,but not as a straight or V unfortunately. You won't see a 307 on the SPID either. I haven't,anyway.

Re: Anyone with a V6 motor????
I think the V6's were actually considered optional though Tim, because even in the GMC's, the 250 L6 was the standard engine. I don't know if they were on listed on the SPID's that way or not though.

Re: Anyone with a V6 motor????
I thoiught the only one that was not listed on the SPID was the 250 I-6 everything else was an option. My 292 is listed on the SPID I would think they would have done the same with the 351 V-6. How rare was this motor in one of these trucks?

CM1590D is the first part of vin. So 67 GMC's didn't have a spid? Just curious, Thanks Randy

Re: Anyone with a V6 motor????
Randy, my '67 GMC was purchased unmolested from the original owner and it has no glovebox label or any evidence of it ever having one. In the vin.# I believe it will have a "W" indicating it had a V-6 when it was built. You could always look in the springs under the seat and see if the build sheet is still there. On '67 GMC's that is about as close as you can get to a SPID label. As mentioned earlier you can check the engine size on the front, left deck area. If it is a 351 Magnum the 4 bolts that join the carb. to the intake will not be of equal distance side to side comparing front set to back set. Also, 351 Magnum exhaust manifolds look like an I-beam, where as standard 351E manifolds are smooth and rounded.

Re: Anyone with a V6 motor????
My '67 never had a SPID either. Yes, CS models had the 250 as standard, 292 optional and the CM had the 305 standard, 351 optional. Wish I knew how many '67 351E's were built, but I have been told not too many. There were no U.S. '67 GMC CE pickup models, only panels and Suburbans.

Re: Anyone with a V6 motor????
no SPID on my 68 either. it was as basic and un-optioned as possible. I even think the rear view mirror was a dealer installed option.

Re: Anyone with a V6 motor????
According to GMC Pauls info the M in the model number iidentifies it as a V6.
http://www.gmcpauls.com/67-72_gmc.htm This is the only one I have that has any info about the 305 V6 but sadly the date piece is not shown. I wasn't aware that GMC didn't always add a SPID label, guess that why I don't have many of those in my collection. Learn something new everyday, good thread guys! Jeff

Re: Anyone with a V6 motor????
The SPID for the 67 GMC also shows the New Process 435GA instead the typical SM420. Does the 435GA directly bolt on or does it require a different bellhousing? Anyone ever attemped to upgrade to a 435GA?

Re: Anyone with a V6 motor????
Mine came with the NP435-GA. It will bolt in directly in place of a SM420, although mine happens to be on the V6 bell housing. It has a shift pattern like a SM465 in which reverse is all the way over to the right and down.

Re: Anyone with a V6 motor????
The NP435GA was the most common 4 speed behind the V-6's. GMC felt that the ratios were better suited for the V-6, and the 435's torque capacity was higher. The 435 was only used in 4X2's, if the truck was a 4X4, it would have had the SM-420. Also, the 351E was 4X2 only. I did see one 351E with a 3 speed behind it. I think it was an SM-326.
