Heavier Suspension Conversion?

Hey all. I've got a '85 "big 10" that I'm looking to do some cross country traveling with. I'm building her up to have plenty of power, but I'm looking to pull a 40' trailer (about 9K lbs). So, what all needs to be done? Can I put on the heavier spring pack and roll, or do I have to convert to the 14 bolt rear end and 6/8 lug? Many have told me to get another truck, I haven't slapped anyone as yet. I love my truck! As always, thanks in advance for the advice.

Re: Heavier Suspension Conversion?

Since you have a Big 10, that means you have 3/4 ton springs already. An 8 lug 14 bolt rear will bolt right in to give you a true 3/4 ton or you can step up to 1 ton spring packs that will bolt right in for a 1 ton rating.

In front, you can swap rotors and spindles to get 8 lugs. I forget if the front calipers are different or not. You could also put 1 ton springs in the front if you want as well.

With all this, you will basically have a single rear wheel 1 ton truck.

Cool, that's what I was hoping. Here's another question, with the rearend swap can I put in a limited slip or locker? I don't see whynot, just figured I'd ask.

Yes you can do whatever you want to the rear end.

Arn't the 1/2 ton and 3/4ton frames different? As in, 3/4 ton uses thicker gauge steel and more braces?

Re: Heavier Suspension Conversion?

the 1/2 and 3/4 are the same the 1 ton with the dual wheels and perhaps the single wheel ( cant say for sure about single wheel) are larger frames
