I have a Stock Quadrajet that has probaly never been rebuilt and it needs one. Would it be wiser putting a kit in the Q-jet or buy an Edelbrock. I am not concerned with it being stock.
I turned the mixture screws while running and nothing seemed to change, I was told when you do this it needs a good soaking and kit.

My vote is to keep the q-jet.
But, only if you have a q-jet professional rebuild it.

x2 Thats what I am going to have done. I have an Edelbrock carb/manifold and I am going back to the stock carb/manifold on my 402.

I have a new edelbrock on my '70 and a rebuilt q-jet on my '67, and the '70 starts a lot easier. Once it's running though, the '67 runs great. The jury is still out, but I'm leaning towards the edelbrock right now.

imo nothing is better than a properly tuned q jet .
although i run a edelbrock 600
finding some one who(knows) how to rebuild a q jet is a hard thing to do altogether

Q-jets are hard to beat.

I agree with everyone else, a properly rebuilt Q-jet is the way to go

I just replace the old QJ on my truck. I searched the wed and actualy found one on e-bay from one of the carb vendors that said rebuilt. Sure enough it had been cleaned and rebuilt. Now running the numbers off the carb it was for a Nova with a 307 and air, but it works perfectly and is a side inlet carb, like the one that came off and it ran perfectly right out of the box. It cost me 95 plus shipping. Checked on having the original rebuilt and it was over 150.

I'm replacing my Holley in the new year. I have a Edelbrock intake (RPM) on my truck now and I'm going to an Edelbrock 1450 as they recommend this combination. Cost $268.00 bucks. Hard to get a prof. rebuild for that. It's not like I don't have the factory set up either because I do. I have the intake, QG, air cleaner, valve covers and all the heat sheild stuff that I could put on but going Edelbrock anyway. I like the look of it and my truck is not stock. So thats what I'm doin ....

Nothing wrong with a properly tuned q_Jet, however I prefer an electric choke Carter AFB

Just get a can of carb cleaner and if you have a compresor the job is pretty straightforward. Make sure you check for and repair any leaks in the bottom.(The instructions don't mention that).Also check the jet sizes compared to stock specs and replace the float if it has the old plastic one.

GET Cliff's book and do it yourself. He is the best for rebuild also.

Nothing beats a properly set up QJet.
I say this after wearing out two Holly spread bores and trying an Edelbrock b4 going back to an original QJet on my 67 GTO.

When deciding to rebuild a Qjet make sure the throttle shaft isn't loose in the throttle plate. It will suck air there and a rebuild will not help much. There are bushing kits available to repair this but finding someone experienced at it might be difficult. And you can buy an electric choke conversion from Summit and some parts stores for the Qjet. Some Qjets from the late 70's to early 80's came with electric chokes from factory. They work very well.

the book oldgoat listed is very good to have// the book the kit some carbcleaner and if you want to get fancy and get some anodizing paint you can have a great running reliable carb and save yourself over a hundred bucks in the process

The low-mile Edelbrock on my Sierra is leaking real bad,I just noticed this weekend.I don`t know which one it is,yet.It`s leaking out of the left side while sitting and not running.I`ve never had any problems with the good old Q-jet.

Be smart....get the Edelbrock. Finding a rebuilder that can properly build the Q-jet is a rarity in most places. I ran a 1406 on my Elky for 7 years without a problem. Try that with a Q.

Geeee...with a Quad seven years means its just getting broken in. It still comes down to experience and do you want a stock looking engine. As mentioned I have the Edelbrock carb/manifold set up and I am going to go back with the my stock set up not because it the Edelbrock carb/manifold caused me any problems. Either set up should do you fine as the replies would testify to. Good Luck.

The Edelbrock ran OK, BUT the performance on my 67 GTO was like night and day after I went back to a QuadraJet!

Old Goat thanks for your help, I have the Quad off and boxed up. I am going to send it to Cliff Ruggles and have him do it. He is running a few months behind but I will probaly be happier in the end.

I guess it is like other things on these trucks it comes down to personal preference.

I like the Q-Jets and my son likes the Holleys.

I rebuilt a a Q-Jet on my '72 GMC back in the 80's and I guess I was lucky because it came out great.

The '71 Chevy I presently have has a Q-Jet and it runs real good, of course my engine is stock.
