how to fix my frame 72 jimmy 4x4 - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

well i checked my frame out were the powerstering gear box goes and is split where the bolts line up.and by the front leaf shackle is. wanted to know what is the best way to fix it.

Hey joemacho, I assume you mean the power steering box, not pump.

If it is cracks, maybe welding, if the whole 3 bolt area is breaking out maybe a frame horn welded on but no one can really say without some pics.

I have seen stiffener plates inside the frame rails and I have seen the horn replaced. Pics will help.

There are stiffener plates made for the second gen trucks as this is a common problem. I believe some have adapted them to fit the first gen blazer frame or you can just weld in some heavy-duty stock. Check CK5.com to find a vendor that sells the second gen stiffener plates.

Yep, there's trouble there...

Not a common problem on a 1st gen but being it's happened you gotta fix it.

Check out Off Road Design or DIY4x4, both great companies and products.

If there isn't a part already made, you could either replace the frame horn all together or make up some plates and weld em in.
OR, find another frame horn and make a plate using it. < (favorite choice IMO)

Ouch - never seen a first gen have a break like that one. Like mentioned above, that happens often on the later frames. Good luck with the repair.

I'll agree, never seen that on a first gen. Might be a good time for a frame up rebuild. LUV has an incredibly nice rolling chassis he's thinking about selling.

Mine was cracked in the exact location. This is usually the result of putting big tires on the rig and torque from the power steering box cracking the frame. There's a steering box patch kit that you can buy for extra support on the weld. It looks like you're may have already been repaired as you already have bolts in the core support bracket vs rivets. This would make the job MUCH easier.

I'd get this work done as soon as possible. You'd be amazed at how 1/16" of an inch of play right below your steering box will cause slop in your steering. Every time you turn the wheel it flexes there and 1/16" of an inch of flex (there) is about 1/8 of a turn on your steering wheel.
