50th anniversary find
I found a 68 anniversary truck near where I live. I passed by this house one day and it was just sitting there, so I stopped to ask about it. The truck is a lwb custom, it has the 551 paint code, with either 307 or 327 with 3 on the tree. The truck runs good but the trans does not shift right. The only dent the truck has is on the drivers side of the bed (the side would have to be replaced). The truck also needs rockers.
He wants $650. Should I buy it? I figure that the opportunity to own one doesn't come along very often. |

Re: 50th anniversary find
That is what I wanted to hear. I have one more question. If it had a 327 it would have that listed on the spid because it would have been an optional engine right? The truck probably has a 307 because there was no engine option on the spid.
Here are some more options: Half ton, heavy rear spring, rv mirrors, power steering. It did not have buckets, so it has the white and cloth bench seat. As soon as the weather gets better here, I will get it and post pics. Thanks for the input. |

Re: 50th anniversary find
327 will more than likely be a 4b carb vs 2b for 307. The 327 option will be listed on the SPID. I'm assuming it is a CE not a CS model number. You'd have to run numbers on the block to be sure of what engine is sitting in the bay.
Go buy it and get some pictures!

Re: 50th anniversary find
I got the old wrecker and brought it home today. The guy said that he would take $550 so I did not argue. Here are some pics. It is missing the hubcaps, and it has a 305 instead of the 307, but it is a good truck.
Has anyone had any factory style seat covers made out of the original or close to original material? I have another question, it may be stupid I dont know. On this truck as you can see in the pics it has side marker lights like all 68's have. The only problem is that they dont have a bulb or even a place for a bulb. Was that common on 68 trucks? |

Re: 50th anniversary find
Don't want to hijack this thread but what are you running for wheels and tires bob68327? Back spacing? Do you convert to discs up front?

Re: 50th anniversary find
Heck of a deal for the $$$!
That seat that bob68327 posted looks like a correct custom 50th bench to my eye.

Re: 50th anniversary find
FYI there is a great article in the FAQ section on adjusting a 3 speed column shift. Simple 10 minute operation and mine sure shifted better!
Great score! Is the 305 the original engine? I thought 305 started later?
