gas gauge quick test.

Gas gauge not working in 68 chvy with 327. Is there a quick way to tell if its the gauge or in the tank. I have read lots of other threads about testing this and that. Not sure what volts or ohms I am looking for. A test light I can handle. Barely.
Gary
The gauge is stuck on empty
THanks again

Re: gas gauge quick test.

what is the gauge doing or not doing. Thats a good starting point.

Pull the wire off the sender at the tank.. if the tank goes all the way over past full, it's probably in your sending unit.

Re: gas gauge quick test.

Then, with the egnition on, take that same wire and ground it to the body of the tank. If the guage drops to empty, then everything from the wire to the guage is fine, and the problem is in the tank.
If the guage doesn't react to either of these, then it's time to start troubleshooting more, but more times than not, I have found the wire to be corroded and green and cut underneath the chrome sill plate in the drivers door jamb.

Re: gas gauge quick test.

67-72 sending units run 0 to 90 ohms. 0 is empty and 90 is full. WES

At our shop we had a tool that was a set of different potentiometers (adjustable resistance device) that made it very easy to diagnose. Now knowing the resistance you might swing by Radio Shack and see if they have something close. Otherwise, you can replace both with known good units. You still may not fix it if a wire is broken inbetween.
In my past experience, 98.657% of the time it was the sending unit since it has moving parts that wear out but time is money and money =time, but guessing also equals time and money also.
This is just my other hobby idea. Got a slot car track? The hand controllers are potentiometers. Hook it up wires at tank that go to gauge and see if changes happen.
Also check the the wires for continuity between the sender and gauge.

Re: gas gauge quick test.

I just got a new sending unit from LMC and would not work. Had to drop the tank to check it and it was a bad solder joint and the float filled with gas

Re: gas gauge quick test.

Does the float come out when you pull the sending unit?
