Any Insurance for Old Trucks out there?

I use Gieco. They won't give me anything but the book value on my 77 truck. I tried several of the old car insurance groups. Most of them have stupid rules like having to have your truck in a locked garage AT ALL TIMES except when actually driving it. Others want only driving on Sundays, Parades, and Car shows. Limited mileage, etc. Grundy would ONLY insure your Daily Driver if you already had PREMIUMS of $10K or MORE. That's incredible. Can anyone direct me to an insurance Co that I can insure my ride for $8 to $10 K without a lot of strings?

Re: Any Insurance for Old Trucks out there?

Insurance on a "classic" can be different. The Grundy's, Haggerty's use whats called an "agreed value". You agree on what the car is worth and pay a premium based on that agreed amount. If you total your car they cut you a check for the agreed price w/out haggling. Unfortuantely, they can add strings to their agreements.

Standard insurance companies use blue book values as you know. State Farm uses a modified system which is what I use on my camaro. I had to provide three examples of similar cars that were similarily optioned. I then based the value of my car on the value of these three cars. Now if I total my car, its not the "agreed value" like the Grundy's, but somehow its supposed to be similar.

I've heard all state might have a similar plan but not sure. Try State Farm.

Both of mine have classic insurance under Safeco Insurance, and for both of them total it's $37 a month full coverage...I have a $14,000 declared value on my stepper and a $7500 on my blazer. If you want more info I can dig up my policy.

Re: Any Insurance for Old Trucks out there?

I too would like to know about this, I wrecked my 87 in july and it was worth $8500+ I'd been offered for it but the blue book was only $1850, so thats what I got for it. That pissed me off more than not having the truck. but it was to be expected, but I never thought about it.

Re: Any Insurance for Old Trucks out there?

I called most of the ins co listed and they told me they could not help me so I pay $75 a month for liability only I live in Denton county, Texas. Most ins co would say it has to be completely restored or I could not have a trailer hitch, could not put anything in the bed ect ect its a real racket in my opinion. You have a vehicle you drive once a week or less and the want full price for ins

Did you call the Insurance Division of AAA Texas or just the Service Operator? Because AAA sure does offer insurance. 866.487.4222 Even open 9-5 Central on Saturday.

Re: Any Insurance for Old Trucks out there?

Hi guys. If you haven't read this thread yet please do so and see what has happened to one of our members who had FULL coverage on his restored Suburban but is having difficulty with a settlement.

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=267953

There are clauses to be considered like "uninsured motorists". All policies do not have the same coverages. They can be tailered to fit your needs but you most likely have to ask.
As in MVPCO's case you don't have to be driving your truck to lose it. Home owners policy would not pay for the 3 vehicles damaged, drunk did not have any insurance. It's a nightmare that can happen to any one of us at any time.

Re: Any Insurance for Old Trucks out there?

I called Safeco today. They quoted a 6 month premium of $160 for an agreed value of $8K with 2500 miles per year usage. I am pleased with that. All I need is to provide pics or go to a local agent to verify condition. Not bad. There's an agent right down the street. Cool. Guess it's time to give Geico the boot.

Re: Any Insurance for Old Trucks out there?

Wow! I pay more than that per month and that's with a squeaky clean record and a darn good credit score. But that's the cost of living in the city. What is your annual mileage? Is there a cap? I drive mine much less than the 7K I'm alotted.

Way to go LBJ, I'm glad you found coverage that works.

Re: Any Insurance for Old Trucks out there?

Guess since I've been driving for 42 years with little accident activity. Good credit rating. Plus, that was with putting my 2004 Chevy on there too. 2 car discount. The whole thing for both trucks is $625 for 6months.

The premium will vary with different values for deductables, high limits, and all that. I have to get out my Geico policy and really compare to be sure we are talking apples and apples for a fair comparison.

Re: Any Insurance for Old Trucks out there?

There's one thing I never understood - what does credit history have to do with driving skills? Like for instance, I have no credit rating at all, yet at work I'm trusted with vehicles that most insurance cartels representatives won't be able to afford for quite a while. I understand rates being calculated on residence and mileage and such, but credit score? Also, I know plenty of folks with perfect credit scores who can't drive worth of s***! Someone please explain...

Re: Any Insurance for Old Trucks out there?

Ive been down this road before it doesent matter anymore since colorado switched to the tort system and assuming I wasent the cause of the accident I would be dealing with the other persons insurance unless I had a 2nd policy on my truck. with the last accident I was involved in his insurance said my 76 was only worth $1400 so I had to prove more worth which only got me 3K after the buy back for $300.00. His insurance gave me a list of replacments and said I could buy another SWB for $800-1000. Yea............

So Check you state insurance before you get a different policy that might not help you at all in an accident.

I'll explain it but it doesn't necessarily mean I agree with it. Actuaries found that people with bad credit scores GENERALLY have more accidents. (Brought to you by the same people that assign a dollar value to human life. It all makes sense from a logical perspective as in a spreadsheet, but not necessarily in real life.) Heck, I'm paying a couple/few thousand a year for insurance even though, thank G•d, I haven't had an accident in 15 years or a ticket in over 10 years.

You see, my rate isn't based on my personal experience alone, it's my community as well as my "profile.
