cowl induction

i have 2 hoods for my truck how hard would it be to make one into a cowl induction my self instead of buying on or should i sell both hoods and use the money to buy a cowl hood

cowl hoods cost around 400, plus paint. you can buy cowls or scoops for hoods but i think they are bad about cracking.

cowl hood

The speed center in rapid city SD. sells steel scoops.They are 150.00. www.thespeedcenter.net I don't know any thing about them. You have to think about the time and materials vs.the cost of new hood. Mike

I wish they had steel cowl hoods, with alittle taller scoop, maybe 4 to 6 inch options, how tall are the ones offered now 2 1/2 ?

Don't do fiberglass on steel!. It looks good for awhile. Here's my last truck with a Harwood 2.5" scoop.

If you have any welding and fabrication skills you can make your own.All of the after market cowl hoods I have seen are made off a camaro pattern. By this I mean the ridge in the hood is the same as the camaro and not the wide ridge of the truck.I took and old hood and used a sheetrock square to lay out the width ,height and mounting flanges.I cut it out with a cutoff tool so as not to distort.I then took and old pair of vise grip an welded a couple of pieces of angle iron to them to use as a hand brake to make the bends and shape the scoop.I then cut the 2nd hood so that I could slide scoop in from the bottom up to the flange I had bent on the scoop.I drilled 1/8 in holes every 2 inches along the flange and mig welded them as spot welds.Once this is done you can finish weld the scoop. I put a spot with the mig about every inch.After going all the way around I started at the first spot and repeated the process as many times as necessary until welds were continuous.After grinding and finishing it needed very , very little bondo to finish grinding marks.I did this for myself obout 6 or 7 years ago before goodmark started producing them.I was at the drag strip about 6 months after I put it on my truck and had a guy offer to purchase it.I told him it was not for sale but when he offered $500 for it I drove home without a hood.I probably had about 10hrs of fitting and welding to get it finished and primed.I have one laid out now but have not did the cutting and welding yet.I will try and work on it in the next couple of weeks and take pics as I go along to post for anyone interested.

67/72junkie you have a picture of that custom cowl hood? I wasn't aware that the center ridge was different from standard hood ridge. Is it like that with all after market cowl hoods?

hood

I don't have any pics of the hood I sold but I will take pics of the one i'm doing now and post.It will probably be 3 weeks before I get a few nights In the shop to work on it .I have to make a trip to NV and a trip to Kansas before I do anything else.Every aftermarkethood I've seen has been a camaro pattern but that doesn't mean there isn't one with the wide ridge.I just haven't seen one personally.I made mine about 3 1/2 inches high and slightly longer than the camaro style so that it starts more towards the front of the hood .I think the camaro style is a little small for our hoods.

If you look at the hood in Big Os Post Char pics you will see what I'm talking about.The hood on that truck has the narrow ridge but is a newer style that the scoop goes all the way to the leading edge of the hood.
