Question 350 Block Identification

Okay, so I'm having starter troubles, can't seem to get one to last very long, and yes I'm setting the engage depth correctly. Flexplate still looks good. I decided that maybe I should make sure that I was getting the correct starter for the year of my block. Here's my numbers

Block casting #- 3970010 (has a 29 off to the side)
Engine ID #- V0913TDD
Found by oil filter pad: 010
020
155
I have crawled over-under-on top of-everywhere for hours looking for the partial VIN stamp, but have had no luck.

For what I decoded, the block could either be a 72 or an 80 (as per the block ID#)

O'reilly's auto shows 2 different #'s for starters of these year blocks, my question is, does anybody know what the difference is in these starters, or is it just a number change.

Thanks for any help guys.
Jared

Re: 350 Block Identification

Could be a number change. As far as starters one has a staggered bolt pattern, and has same length bolts, the other has 2 bolts straight across from each other and one's long and the other short.

Casting Date
Small block casting date is located on driver side rear of block on flange forward of bellhousing. Big block on the right side of engine above the oil pan rails.
Casting Date Example: E038 - (E = Month, 03 = Day, 8 = Last digit of model year (1978)).

Month: A = Jan, B = Feb, C = Mar, D = Apr, E = May, F = Jun, G = July, H = Aug, I = Sep, J = Oct, K = Nov, L = Dec

So by that and your 020 numbers I'd guess 80 block.
