Anyone have some picture of the difference in the high and low transmission hump?? I'm not sure what i'm dealing with here.

Here is a picture of a low tranny hump and a high tranny hump. The low humps came on the trucks equipped with a column shift (auto or 3-speed) and the high humps came on the trucks equipped with a floor shift (4-speed). I hope this information is helpful.

Don:

The first picture is a low hump and they were spot-welded in place at the factory. The second picture is a high hump and they are removable by unbolting them from several capture nuts on the underside to the cab floor.

The front portion between the hump and the firewall is spot-welded in place on all cabs, regardless of whether they are equipped with a low hump or high hump tranny cover.

Tony I just realized I may be making a big mistake. will the 4 speed bolt in with the small hump or will I have to change it out, because I'm getting ready to purchase a 465 of a fellow member in east tennessee and I didn't know this?

I may be mistaken, however all the literature I have read, indicates the low humps were spot-welded in and the high humps were bolted in. Maybe there was a combination of both and I don't have the same personal experience with the '60-'63 Chevy Trucks as I do with the 4-5-6 Chevy Trucks.

A factory SM420 or SM465 4-speed transmission, with the factory transmission cross member will not fit under the low hump tranny cover, without modification to the low hump cover.

In order to make this work and be a factory-correct fit-up you will need the high hump tranny cover, as well as, the front panel, that goes from the front of the high hump cover and the firewall. This can easily be removed from a donor cab, by drilling out 10-12 spot-welds and gently pursuading the cover off the firewall with a flat chisel or flat pry bar. Be careful not to distort it, because it will need to keep it's correct shape to mate-up properly with the firewall and high hump cover when re-installing.

I think I remember reading somewhere of a rare exception to the low hump welded rule...and was hoping you could explain it. It may have been for a heavy duty cab of some sort. No biggie really...
