Rubbing panels. (non-perv)

What do you guys do about the panels that rub against other panels. Like the fenderwells where they are bolted to the fenders.. Thats just a matter of time before that gets metal to metal and starts rusting....

What do you guys do with those areas when reassembling? Do you do anything special there???

Re: Rubbing panels. (non-perv)

I took the fender wells of my 69 Chevy couple of months ago and noticed some rust buildup but it wasn't too bad after about 15 years when I had them off the first time. Fortunately I'm not in the "salt on the streets" belt here in Texas.

Not sure what a person can do other than sand the mating surfaces real good and paint them with a good type of rust preventative paint. Moisture and dirt grime will creep into those crevices no matter what you do, though. I suppose a person could use some sealant in there.

Just wonder if there is some better design or something. I know two metals rubbbing together the paint will come off REALLY quick and then rust is RIGHT around the corner.... I just want to do this once, and do it right....

Tighten the crap out of your front clip. It shouldn't move very much at all. You're "over imagining" how much the body parts flex

I used fender welting on my rear step fenders.

67ChevyRedneck is right regarding tightening/flexing. I noticed just minimal surface rust on the mating surfaces where the two metals were against each other. The rest of the surface areas still had paint. I believe I used black rustoleum on them. That was 15 years ago and probably could had gone a lot longer without major rust damage.

Most of the really bad rust that I've noticed on the inner fenders has been towards the front under the battery area. I use a plastic battery protector on my trucks like the ones used on boats but without the lids.

check with your local paint supply store. I know my buddy used a clear plastic adhesive tape made specifically for this on my 56. I have also seen him use the soft side of the adhesive velcro for this as well.
