Hey guys I need some help!

Yep I need a hand figuring out what H2o temp sender to use in LowBuck.
You see I want to use the stock dash gauge but the stock sending unit is like a 1/2 NPT and my 92 LT1 only has a 3/8NPT spot in the head. I have already re-wired the fire wall bulk head and hooked the wire up to a sender I had found but it reads way off. The parts store can't tell me what Ohms the gauge or sender is stock so I have no way of finding a cross over sender for my application. Does any one have a part number for the correct sender but in a 3/8NPT size?

Tell you what the first person who can give me the right part number that works corectly I will send out a set of ether cab dolly or cab lift plans for your help!

use your stock temp sensor (for the carbed engine) and use a 3/8npt to 1/2npt adaptor....that make sense???

yeh I tried that but the adapter was too long with the sender to fit with my headers. Do you know of a short adapter?

My parts store only had a two part adapter to get it from 3/8npt to the 1/2npt. Is it 1/2npt or am I off on the stock one?

Use a 3/8 ths to 1/2 inch street 90* ell.it should give you enough room.Just a suggestion but it looks like it would fit.At least it might get you going until you find something that would look better.

If you have the room, and feel brave, you could tap out the hole in your head to the bigger size. I've done it on intakes before, and if you're careful it works/seals fine.
Someone offered a few of the stock 67-72 senders turned down on a lathe and re-threaded about a year ago on the parts board. I don't remember who that was though.

The only ones I have seen are not deep enough on the 1/2" side to recieve the sender with out bottoming out. Is their a special one for sending units?
I would rather not us an adapter due to looks but if it my only choice I would do it.

I will also concider the lath trick if I can find someone with the right die for 3/8npt.

As for tapping my head, nope not that brave

Have you tried using a 1/2 to 3/8 bushing instead of the adaptor. They also make a face bushing that looks like a helicoil that should give you the clearance

I wish it was that easy but my head has the femal 3/8npt and the stock sender has the male 1/2npt. This is why the local parts store adapter was so long because he had to put a few together in order to get it to step up. If it had to step down then it would be nice and short..

I did some digging today at work and came up with something maybe kind of close. These are Carquest part numbers.
The TS6 is the factory 1/2" sending unit. These are its specs--
Closes at 100F at 368 ohms at 32 tolerance
Opens at 220F at 80 ohms at 125 tolerance
The closest ohm match I could find in a 3/8" sending unit was a TS225.
Closes at 100F at 239 ohms at 10 tolerance
Opens at 220F at 28 ohms at 6 tolerance

I have no idea what the tolerance means, but this is the closest sending unit I could find as far as ohms are concerned. I looked at a picture, and this is a compact sending unit that would work well there...if it would read halfway decent. It was used only on Fords, but I forgot to write down what applications. The part number should interchange...

Maybe it will work?

There is a lot of brass meat on the temp sender. I believe you can turn the 1/2" id to 3/8" and pipe thread it 3/8NPT.

There is a post somewhere in the monster pile of archives of this being done by another member.

So what are you putting the Y block into? I have a 51 F1 with a merc flatr head in it right now but will replace it with a cobra 4.6 DOHC motor for my son (or that is what I am telling the wife as he is only 9mo)

Well we did some more checking today and found that the ones listed above would still be way off for my gauge reading. I had called a freind of mine yesterday to ask him about it and I guess it bugged him that he did not have an answer so he made this. He took a hydro fitting and an NPT coupler and silver soldered them together. He may have to do another one that is a bit longer because this one lets the sender bottom out just before it gets tight. I will try a few things on Sunday to see how it goes.
