Thanks Mike. I got the MSDS and instructions, it said 1.4-1.6mm and 40-60 psi....the one thing we missed was that with the DP401LF activator you are supposed to mix it then wait 30 minutes before spraying, oops. i got another quart of the DP90LF and this time got the DP402LF activator instead, no wait with it.
I live on the east-side of Norman, but the cab is in Tuttle at Scott's shop
you think it would work better with the suggested 1.4-1.6mm tip? it didn't hardly want to flow through the 2.0mm, but maybe that was due to us not waiting 30 min to spray it....
You should not need a 2.0 tip and waiting 30 minutes won't change the viscosity that much. Are you sure there is not a reducer that also goes with it? 1.4-1.6 tip should be plenty. Are you going to shoot the cab again this weekend or when are you going to be there? I don't mind coming over, my work shop is in Washington, just south of both locations. Just let me know.

Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build

yeah, I've looked and PPG says not to reduce it, it will lower the corrosion protection.
I still have to talk to Scott, but hopefully he will be available tomorrow or Sunday. I will let you know when I find out.

I assume you have used the dupont metal conditioner....does it have phosphoric acid in it?

Oh heck no!
So was it the wrong stuff? That's the reason why we used the 2.0 gun because it was so thick otherwise we would have used the 1.4..

All the metal conditioners/etch primers have phosphoric in them. I am not up on PPG products anymore, but if they say 1.4-1.6 tip, then it should not require a 2.0 tip to shoot. Did you ask the retailer about it?

Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build

I got it at Palace auto supply.....they either don't have a clue or don't care to help......I'm kicking myself for not biting the bullet and buying the dupont gallon......now since i have started with the DP, think I need to finish with it. found more info saying you can mix 2 parts primer, 1 part activator, and 1/2 part reducer to make it a sealer.....but if it is being applied as primer, no reducer..... also found lots info that we didn't have to do the metal cleaner/conditioner, with the blast, could have just wiped it down with wax and grease remover then shot the dp on it

I will be using dupont on the rest of the body and maybe the frame.....just due to the customer service

Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build

The last mix you mentioned was roughly how the primer was mixed that my friend and I did on my truck. I mixed it 2:1:1.

Im no expert by any means, but Im thinking it would be reduced for sure.

Is it a high build product??

Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build

no it is a 1.5mil protective, moisture proof primer, then after it you can use filler and high build/sandable.......that requires no reducer according to the PPG site.

what primer is on your truck?

Jason, i'm working on it now

Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build

Joe, it was 5 years ago. I know it was a budget primer. I didnt buy it because at the time there were 3 of us doing trucks and we kinda all bought different stuff/ materials and I ended up using 1/2gal of primer that someone else bought as a trade for some stuff I had at the time.

You will eventually get it straight.

I'm not even gonna comment on the pic of Scott and his response...

I found some curved arms off of some old wheelchair lifts in our shop with a nice 90* radius, welded some smaller tube to the dolly and drilled holes. I just have it on the rear now, but I'm going to add the smaller tube to all 4 sides so I can tilt which ever direction...I have to give credit to Rokcrln, if i hadn't seen this who knows if the gears would have started turning.....

one week is lots of time, just pay my weekly salary and I will dedicate the whole time to your cab

I don't remember the time frame exactly, but if you wait too long between coats, you should sand the whole area before coating again. I have the info sheet at the shop....I can look for you tomorrow if that will help.

Like I said before, I'm not an experienced painter and 7 days seems like a big window. Was that on a can or MSDS or just hearsay? I can't read the fine print on the side of the can any more. I'm in denial that I need reading glasses.
