Trucks first time at track!!

well i bit the bullet and bought the slicks today took the beast to the track for the first time. i had some ignition problems every pass. she was breaking up pretty bad each run.

First pass
2.00 60ft
9.5 1/8th
15.1 1/4
87.16 MPH

that run was breaking up VERY badly

Second pass
1.84 60ft
8.7 1/8
14.13 1/4
90.00 MPH

second run still was breaking up ALOT but i launched a bit harder

Third pass
1.79 60ft
8.4 1/8th
13.35 1/4
97.96 MPH

she was still breaking up but seemed much better than before.

Overall she did pretty good for the first track times tomorrow is a Test N Tune and i may take her after i mess with some wiring on the Dizzy. seems as tho my dissy wires are coming loose causing it to break up, she just falls flat on her face and pops really bad. had to pedal it a few times Another thing is i cant launch too hard cuz when i try to stall her up around 3k she starts to break the tires loose and i almost rolled thru the lights and i cant manually shift cuz my shifter will throw me into neutral.

Ill post up some times if i go tomorrow. thanks guys

Re: Trucks first time at track!!

First thing I would do is buy a rachet shifter if you plan on continuing to race it. Trying to manually shift on the column is a bad accident waiting to happen.

Whats your timing set at? What type of carb? How hot is it there? Fuel pump? Pull a spark plug and let us know what it looks like. My guess is your timing is off or you are running lean. I am assuming you are meaning its falling on its face when you say "breaking up".

Nice times though! That 60 ft is pretty darn good. Did you adjust your tune between passes? Thats some pretty wild variance in your ET's

already has a ratchet shifter but its a standard shift pat, causing it to go into neutral when manually shifting. Timing was at 38* when dynoed. i changed to 40* tonight. Plugs are black from being too rich. carb is a holley 750 DP. Fuel Pump is a holley mechanical. when i dynoed she was 13.1 a/f across the board. never had a problem till last weekend with the wiring on the dizzy. the harness fromt he base to the cap is FUBAR. so i plan to recrimp some new terms. didnt mess with tune between passes. thats caused by the ignition problems. the 60ft is weak IMO, Im used to seing 1.5 60fts in my mustang i guess

thanks for the good words sir

Rough day at the track is almost always better than a good day at work! Cool!

Re: Trucks first time at track!!

i am confused when you say it is a rachet shifter and it goes into nutral.. i thought that the hole idea behind a rachet shifter was for positive shifts without hitting nutral. most generally should not the shifter be all the way down like in the 1st gear position and then you slap it all the way forward to the park position and that gets you to first, then do just the oposite slap and that gets you to secound, and again back up towards park and that gets you to 3rd... on some rachet shifters dont you have to push the shifter down hard in nutral to get it in rachet mode and out of standard mode? what brand and model is this shifter?

Re: Trucks first time at track!!

Well guys i made it to the test n tune today i fixed the dizzy problems i had but had timing issues well at the track i made 4 passes and here they are

first pass
2.1 60'
9.13 1/8th
14.2 1/4
93.99 MPH

she felt dead on that one

second pass
2.0 60'
9.07 1/8th
14.3 1/4
92.35 MPH

I changed nothing on that pass but tried to launch harder

third pass
1.87 60'
8.22 1/8th
12.89 1/4
103.88 MPH

this pass we messed with the timing. noticed timing was WAY to high

fourth pass
1.8 60'
8.21 1/8th
13.00 1/4
101.13 MPH

this pass she seemed like she launched in 2nd gear and it sucked!!

overall it was a decent day, would have been better if we were allowed more than 4 freakin runs!! normally during T & T they allow "round robin" which is where you can hot lap it. would have been great to mess with the timing a touch more and maybe play with the shifter cable. but im happy with that 12.89 for a while!!! I really think she has a mid-low 12sec pass in her on motor...

what you guys think??

its a hurst Pro matic2 truck style. great for the street but sux on the strip. i need to switch to a Gate style shifter im afraid or a reverse vb would do the trick.

Re: Trucks first time at track!!

i am not trying to seem ignorant or start an argument but i can not understand how you are slipping it into nutral. i found the instruction on this shifter and i think it operates as i described. are you geting the shifter into rachet mode.. here is a short link...http://shopping.netsuite.com/s.nl/c....it.A/id.113/.f

Re: Trucks first time at track!!

it shifts fine normally but when racing it will go into 3rd or "drive" and then slip right back in to neutral. maybe its just a cable adjustment issue. like stated before this was the first passes ever made in this truck so im still workin out the kinks

*EDIT* rachet shifting UP is the problem. but going down (if it were reverse VB) would be fine
