Cool FF 14 bolt brake conv. question

I am getting the parts together to do a rear brake conv. on a '74 3/4 ton FF 14 bolt 10.5 Corp rearend and will be adding an Eaton Posi as well as new 3.73 gears. All of this is happening on my 1971 3/4 burban.
Now I am having someone else do the Posi and gear change, don't have the experence to not fubar the job...but I want to do the brakes myself. The question is, will I have to pop the diff. cover to release the axles on this rearend or will they release when I unbolt and and remove the large hub units and drums? The answer will help determine which will get done first.

Re: FF 14 bolt brake conv. question

No need to pull cover to remove axle shafts on floating rearends. All you have to do is unbolt the hubs and pull out the axles.

Hope that helps

Re: FF 14 bolt brake conv. question

Drums don't even have to come off to get the shafts out, just unbolt the 8 axle shaft bolts and the shafts slide right out. Don't even have to jack up the vehicle. The drums are then held on by hub nuts, etc just like front wheel bearings, once you get the shafts out of the way.

Disc conversion is really easy on these axles. I put one under my Jeep YJ and put discs on it.

Re: FF 14 bolt brake conv. question

So when switching from the drums to the rotors using a '73 3/4 4x4 front rotor, do I still use the inner and outer bearings for said ,73 rotors?

Yes, the hub/bearings, etc is all resused. Here's the deal. Once the drum/Hub assembly is removed form the 14B housing press out the wheel studs. The studs actually pin the drum to the hub. Know you will pin the rotor to the hub using the wheel studs in exatly the same way. So your removing the drum from the hub, then reinstalling the rotor onto the hub in exactly the saem way the drum was attached.

Maybe this will help... http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billav...b_disc_brakes/

And you can buy bolt on Caliper brackets all over the place pretty cheap. You don't have to weld them on.
