NP205 Only seems to have 4hi - neutral - 4lo

Hey guys,

I've had my truck for a few years, and still seem to be having the problem with it not being able to go into 2wd. All the way back is 4hi, then it still has the front driveshaft engaged all the way until neutral. I know it is definitely a 205 and not a 203. Is this a common issue? Something that can be fixed by adjusting the shift linkage, or does it need a rebuild?

Thanks for any advice.

I vote shift linkage. I was thinking broken roll pin on a shift fork but that would allow a mix of high and low - then BANG... So it's not that.

Is it actually driving the front or is it just internal friction of the gears, bearings, and lube turning the front?
I would try - disconnect the front driveshaft and turn the front output by hand with the truck in park, engine not running (or in gear for a stick) in each of the TC shift positions. The front should not turn by hand in 4 hi or low but should turn in 2 wd.

Currently I can only turn the front driveshaft by hand when the Tcase is in neutral. I'm not sure what taking the drive shaft off would give me?

Sorry, wasn't thinking about having the front hubs not locked.. No need to disconnect the driveshaft.
I'm voting for linkage issue of some sort. If not it sounds like a shift fork loose on a shift rail?

coming off of your shifter check the pin/hole that attaches the shifter to the two shifter rods on the case...my plate hole was 'oblonged' due to years of use...i didnt have full range...those plates are easily re=welded and drilled, or anothe can be made from flat stock...good luck...scott
