Eaton H052 - Drop Out Pumpkin Swap?

Hey folks,

Hunting down the real deal on the H052 is what brought me to this board a few yrs back.

Here is what a local guy running the truck wrecking yard in arcadia (peck & live oak) told me. I can take my truck with this Eaton to a diff shop in alhambra and have them install a different drop out with 3.46 gears! and possibly swap out shafts for a 6 or 5-lug as well. Anybody ever hear of this pumpkin swap on an Eaton?

I've not contacted the shop that was mentioned - yet. Will try to do it this coming week.

Anybody ever hear of this swap??

Well the Eaton does have a drop out pumpkin like a 9" Ford and so it is swappable. As far as the axles are concerned you would have to machine the full floating hubs to a 5 or 6 lug pattern. Honestly I don't think it's worth it to machine down those hubs as the rearends are hard to get parts for and getting rarer. Plus I do not think it will machine down small enough for a 5 on 5 bolt pattern. I would look for a semi-floater 14 bolt with 3.42 gears if it was me...and Tony's may even have one. Also talk to Ron at Walker 400 in San Gabriel and ask about one. He can find it for you on the call out. Tell him Cuz from the fire department told you to call.

coffee - hmmmmm - kitchen is on the other side of the house. so ya it a b :-)

rearend - i thougt the same thing but want all at once. need direct bolt in or i would have gone with a 14 bolt in the first place. its my only ride for now besides the bike. a 14 bolt would reqire minimal work. that i can not do at this time and dont know of any shops locally as i did when i was up north. starting over here in so cal so to speak. need to make contacts here - soon.

The 14 bolts are cheap. If your stick with the full floater you can build it as funds allow and bolt it in. Speeway Engineering probably still sells the brackets to weld on to mount the rearend to the trailing arms and other vendors on this forum sell track bar mounts. I've seen one on here that makes it longer(so it travels in a longer arc for less side to side movement). Personally, I would stay eight lug and go with 4 wheel discs. That way you could use stock 16" wheels and get your whitewalls you want and still have a truck that can tow. You know a 4.10 rearend becomes about a 2.90 with a 700R4 in OD? A 4.56 becomes a 3.20. Best of both worlds IMO.

i just found a 8-lug front disc setup locally on craigslist. will have to let that one pass this time. but may consider the ff 14 bolt. will just have to see who locally can swap out. i need cutting and welding done stuff. i'd love to do i myself but not the know how or the tooling to torch cut weld. can do just bout anything been a shadetree wrench since i dont know when....

how did you come up with the calculations you listed?

if i can keep my rig a true C20 - with a rat look i'll be happy.

The weld on brackets were cheap, and it just used front 3/4 rotors and calipers.

Although, you must run Eldorado rear calipers to retain the e-brake. This guy here will be running a driveline e-brake.

you guys rock! i'm not easily swayed but i'm leanin towards Cuz's suggestions. i can take the 14 bolt disc brake setup off my eation and trfr to a 14bolt rear. easy enough. only issue is settin up on the trail arm. gotta find a honest place locally to do the welding and such. last place it took my rig to f-d me big time. they did not check brake line clearance when they removed the seized bolts to swap out my 1 ton springs to lower height 3/4 ton springs. the exhaust slightly rubbed into the steel line and brakes failed 6-weeks later in stop and go traffic on i-5. i ended up rearin a mazda at 10mph. wrinkled the d-side f-fender, after mkt bumper, and grill support. i know i could have sued them but hate dealin with bs and supposed honest / skillful shops and the courts. guess i'm just lucky that nobody got hurt and damage was not too serious....

so now i'm currently going through parts stuff in my garage that i'm gonna sell off.

before i list the parts for sale, how do i go bout this here or can i list them on this site? have not dug down to the classifieds as of yet.

Norm the 700R4 or 4l60E have an overdrive ratio of 30%. High gear is .70, so you take your final drive ratio X .30 to get the final drive ratio in overdrive.

2 questions.
1. Do you have front disc brakes?
2. What is your ratio on the Eaton rear axle.

My questions are based on trying to help you economically bring your truck to a nice highway cruiser.

Based on my assumptions, my 2 cents is keep the Eaton, install front disc brakes, find a 700r4 overdrive automatic for the truck. You probably will never kill that Eaton rear axle. The front disc brakes will be a nice upgrade from the old drums and the OD auto has the lowest low gear and the highest high gear of any GM automatic. Now your running gear is done, unless you want to find a Detroit locker for the rear, which is pretty easy because about half of them have them in it. The Eaton is a lighter rear axle, just as strong as a 14 bolt and has more ground clearance, this is why I would keep it. Besides this is where most of your welding and fab work would need to be done, this would eliminate it.

No front disc - yet. will hunt for this after i part with the stuff i have. i know i can go to tonys or pick a part to get this. did you know that tonys was to close by 6/1/08. at least thats what they told me in May.

i've got the 4.56 gears in the eaton. never opened it up but there is no locker in it either. running 275/70r 16 = 31.5" tires just to keep the rpm's as low as possible. it was worse with the 245's that were on there at one time.
now 245's up front only.

i understand your logic here. not having many to bounce my thoughts off of on this subject has been nerve racking - until today!

i know installin od tranny is not just swappin it in. i did talk to bowtie 700r4 shop in hesperia and they said i can get all setup for bout 2,200 and 3 days down time. not bad but want to see if there are other local options....

I thought Tony's was gonna relocate. If he is selling out the front end parts from him may be cheaper than PaP.
Actually the 700r4 bolts up to the engine and the crossmember probably just has to move back a little. I suppose the front half of the drive shaft has to be shortened. Then they will set up the shifter and kick down cable which is a very important adjustment on these transmissions.
Does the 2200 include the transmission? If so that's not too bad, the transmission rebuilds in most places are 1500 to 1700.

He said the state wanted him gone 6/1. He also said that any frontends in the 70's and earlier he had scrapped the week b4 i got there! I seen a few a PaP that same day. If not I will contact the one u mentioned earlier.

Norm,

My son lost his trans cooler in the radiator. Polluted his cooling system and drained his trans pan, causing terminal meltdown on his 4l60e. Shopping around the best deal he could find is Precision Allison Transmission in Upland.
Around $1600.00 with a bunch of upgrades, (similar to a 4l65e). So the 2200 for the place in Hesperia installed and complete is not too bad. By the way, this guy in Upland, his shop is so clean you could probably eat of the work benches. Find a new place of employment yet?

As for finding new job - Thanks but no not yet. There are a few possibilities in and outside of the telecom industry. Will see what the coming week has in store. Looks like I'm gonna have to bite the bullet and take what I can for now...

I don't know, I've been at work a lot. We have people out on these fires and I am backfilling here at work. I am scheduled to be off Sunday the 13th.
I also need to locate a 14 bolt semi float for my 93 Suburban. My rear wheel bearings have been replaced once and one is now leaking. For the cost of axles, new bearings and seals, I can buy a 14 bolt and replace it. I will then get bigger brakes, bearings ring gear and carrier in the process. It should last another 200 thousand!

Somehow I missed this thread. Looks like you're going to a 14 bolt. The best gears you will find easily for a HO52 will be 4.10. There were a few 3.90, but I have only heard of them, never saw one. The 4.56 is the most common.

With the 14 bolt you can get 3.73 easily, I have seen a couple of 3.42s.

I think the 3.90 eaton is a myth personally. Someone is probably confusing the the eaton 3/4 ton pumkin with the pre 1963 1/2 rear end which was a pumpkin which came with a 3.90 ratio. The aftermarket produced a 3.55 ratio for pre 63 1/2 tons, hopefully the aftermarket will produce the same gears for the 3/4 tons if enough people ask for it.

Thanks Guys!

I recently bought a 4.10 pumpkin from a fellow board member in AZ for $20 + $60 shipping. Should have it here in the next few days. Will be installing this and a 700r4 soon.

Also I found the local shop that I was referred to in my original post regarding a 3.42 pumpkin swap into a H052. Its Differntial Exchange in Norwalk, CA not Alhambra as mentioned before. I should have this fact or fiction resolved sometime next week. Will post my findings.

Iirc, mine was $100 and I had to go pick it up. But it came with the differential attached.

I am very interested in the 3.42 swap. I remember being told that a 14 bolt carrier would fit in a 10 bolt housing, but the spline count is different.

You are almost right here. A locker from a 14 bolt will fit not the complete carrier. If the carrier did then we'd be installing 3.42 gears without issue - I WISH. Yes the spider gears are a different spline count H052:17 and I believe the 14bolt is 30. You would have to use the axle shafts from the 14 bolt and have them shortened down a bit. From what I've read at pirate4x4 the cut is bout 3/4" or so. Its been awhile since I read that info.

I got the H052 pumpkin with the 4.10 gears from board memeber: tfkorinek today. Will have time to clean it up and plan an install within the next 2weeks. But will try to talk to the local diff shop here on 7/22 or 7/23. Will see what happens.

UPDATE: The 4.10 pumpkin turned out to be a 4.56 - i did get a refund from the seller. Good Guy!
