Wield tansfer case?

I have an 89 GMC Jimmy 350-4 speed standard with an aluminum transfer case that has a small stress crack in it from a hard day of off-roading. I think it is a NP 241c.

I think it might havve cracked because of slack in the drive shaft. Is it recommended to to get it wielded or do I have to replace it?

Thanks for all the help.

Re: Wield tansfer case?

IF you think that it is safe than weld away. just keep a spray bottle of water around to cool things a bit . thats what i would do

Re: Wield tansfer case?

I don't remember which transfer case it is but one of the later model 'aluminum' ones actually has a Magnesium case....it'll say so on it somewhere.

Re: Wield tansfer case?

I guess the real question I have is this: Is it common to wield these transfer cases rather than replace them? I called a shop who said they could.... I want to know from you guys who have seen it done because I drive this truck a lot.

Thanks for all the advice.

They are usually replaced. Are you gonna tig, stick or mig weld it. I don't think it would be easy.

Re: Wield tansfer case?

If the welding is done right, it will be stronger than the case it self-----------

1989 is an oddball year--------------does it have a regular speedo-cable or a sensor? If it has the cable----you will be hard pressed to find another. Depending on the 'crack' and where it is exactly will determine whether or not it can be welded. I welded up an aluminum bellhousing about 20 years ago and still have not had a problem. If you are going to weld, it will have to come comletely apart and be hot tanked before it can be tig welded----good time for a rebuild. Any chance of posting up a pic?
