Well, if you have a locking gas cap, you may be interested in this.
I was real late for work today....turns out, some snow melted and ran into the lock on my cap, then it froze in there come night fall.
This wouldn't be a big deal except I ran out of friggen gas on the way in since I was unable to get any go-go juice.
Just keep it in the back of your mind in the colder months....your cap may get stuck on there and you'll be up the creek.
Now I am running around with the redneck gas cap...you know the kind...it doubles as a red rag to wipe your dip stick off with when you check the oil...
I have a smooth stainless steel one some place, i saw it a couple weeks ago, but now it is MIA.
I know how to find it....go buy a new one.

Just gently heat your key with a lighter or match or any heat source and work it into the lock. It may take a couple of go's but the heat will unfreeze the lock or even better just pick up one of those cheapo hot lock defroster gadgets from an accessory store they use batteries to warm up a slim metal bar that you can slide into your lock to defrost it. Also keep your lock well oiled with a good lock lube (they contain graphite as well as the oil.

Just do the refridgerator magnet trick!. Cut the flexable magnet to the size you need and slap it on the night before a freezing rain. Works like a charm. I had to do this with my last truck all the time.

Happens around here all of the time. When I stop at the gas station I go in and get a cup of hot water and pour it over the gas cap. Even at 10deg. this worked for me.

I use to do Locksmith work.

I use the Liquid Graphite in the lock. Works great on troubled door locks as well. Simply put some on the key and put the key in and out of the lock.

Warning!!!
With the Liquid Graphite if you have it on the key, make sure the key is clean and dry before putting it back in your pocket, I have had it stain clothing.

Don't use WD-40 or any oil based product.......they only draw dirt and dust in the lock leading to more problems.

I would have to agree with oldiron I have used the hot water trick quit a few times just make sure you stop somwhere you can get hot water or coffee ect. it only take a small splash. And it sure beets running out of gas.

I might live down here where the SUN SHINES and you can Swim year round...

BUT, What about that little tiny spray can of stuff they sell to spray into the door/gas/trunk locks when they freeze up.. Yep, you're right I haven't lived in this great SUN all of my life.

It's so easy to spray it into the locks. I remember not being able to get into the car to get it out of the glovebox.. Damn bosses didn't like that excuse for being late.

Guess my excuse when i run out isnt as good here,its too hot to stop and fuel up,you burn your hand on the gas cap.then you run out when its 120 out that sucks especially when you were in a hurry forgot your water,have no change,forgot cell phone.i had to turn into a beggar and ask strangers for change for the phone,very emberassing.me"excuse me sir,you got some change?",then i here "get a job you fkin loser-alcoholic."

I'll definiitely keep that in mind with my girlfriend's Opel...it's got a trick locking gas cap with a cover over it with the Opel logo on it...

Damn good thing it locks, too. It's a $200 gas cap!!!!!

I'm with hoter, never keep more than $3 worth of gas in the tank and you don't have to worry about theives. Of course theives are just my excuse, but...

I wouldn't have a **** locking gas cap. When you turn to the right with a full tank (disregard if you never run over 3 gal in the tank) gas pours out all over your cab. Have you seen what that does to a new paint job before the paint cures? Throw those things away!

Ummm, I been runing my locking gas cap since '98...never a drop come out of it.
After giving over 80 gallons of fuel away to the neighborhood punks, I thought it was time for a cap with a lock.

tell me about it. At least it was all taken back when gas was under a buck a gallon.
The real funny part though, my old longhorn sat for a few years before I bought it. It had a full tank of gas when I bought it. About a week later I notice it has no fuel in it....and some one 3 trailers down is having problems getting his car to run/idle. How did I know it would take a couple bottles of alcohol to get his car to run properly?
I got his ass evicted within a week.

Dont use the pellet gun trick. They can haul you away for that. Instead, resort to the potato gun. Can you imagine the publicity if you were charged.
