Front end rebuild

Hello everyone i am a new member to the site, and had a quick question
aside from doing a frontend alignment is it possible to do a frontend rebuild at home "in the dirt driveway haha" with standerd hand tools? Do any of the bushings/bearings require to be pressed in/out? it is a 70gmc 2wd 3/4 ton thanks

Re: Front end rebuild

It's possible to do a dirt driveway rebuild. You will probably need to have some bushings etc pressed in/out at a shop(there's a machine shop attached to the local Carquest). You do really need some concrete pad to properly support the truck on jackstands. The lower ball joints need to be pressed in/out but the uppers bolt back in.the uppers have rivets from the factory so you will need a way to cut them out or you could drill them. You will also need a "pickle fork" or ball joint seperator. If you look in the suspension forum you should find some info. There may also be a FAQ in that section.

Re: Front end rebuild

As PanelDeland stated, it can be done in the driveway. If you are planning on purchasing a kit, or running MOOG products, look no further than Early Classic Enterprises (ECE). If I recall correctly their kit is around $500 but includes everything you will need.

Good luck with the rebuild!

Re: Front end rebuild

in the exact process you describe currently ('cept on asphalt). i had to wait on some parts and things can take longer to come apart than planned. i don't think any pieces had been replaced in 38 years... also doing disc conv at the same time. mine's not a daily driver so no worries about downtime. i had the lower balljoints done at a local shop along with lower shafts for about $90, both sides, labor only.
