pulling power question

Does a 1 ton dually have anymore pulling power than a 3/4 ton or does it all depend on the engine? Would a 350/350 auto with a 3/4 or 1 ton rearend do just as well? I am wanting a truck that I can use to pull a car trailer with car, a two dolly with another car and a full load of stuff (I am moving) halfway across country and over the Appalacians without any problems. Any suggestions? I don't think my heavy half ton is up to the task, but could I be wrong?

Re: pulling power question

Lets pretend they are both equipped the same with motor transmission and rear gear. Technically the 3/4 ton would have more "pulling power" because it weighs less than a 1 ton dually. On the other hand, the 1 ton would be more stable with a larger load.

I think you might have a little more pulling power with a bigger truck as oppossed to a heavy half with the same drivetrain but for what you want to pull i wouldn,t attempt without atleast a one ton with a big block but preferably a diesel.I am sure you will get a lot of opinions here but from your not just going around the block

Re: pulling power question

As N2Trux said, if both vehicles have the same engine/trans/rear gear.. the lighter truck will have more available power since it has less of its own weight to pull.

Re: pulling power question

Wait, you plan on pulling a car trailer with a car, AND a 2-wheel dolly with another car attached to the car trailer?! -> isn't that illegal or something?

Anyway Trailer brakes are your friend, I just towed a 1-ton chevy van with my '94 1/2ton Silverado with a 305 for about 65 miles and then did a 3/4 Chevy with a Plow on it with the '94 for about the same mileage. It was slow going up hill, but I didn't have any problems.

A 3/4 ton would be great for long distance with just the car trailer, the larger brakes are the biggest benefit of the larger trucks.

Sorry I was thinking pulling power as in weight.Yes the smaller truck would have more power but that still seems like alot of weight for a heavy half

x2
remember that a 3/4t is a 1/2t with heavier rear springs and bigger rear axle, same frame.
