Unhappy DOESN"T SHIFT INTO OVERDRIVE AUTOMATICALLY

I have a problem with my 1986 Chevy S-10 4x4. It's an automatic with an extended cab. The transmission shifts fine, but I can't take off in overdrive. When I hit 40mph, I have to shift into overdrive manually. The truck shifts gears fine until I have to manually shift it. If anyone has any suggestions, parts, or knows anyone who could help, please reply.
Thanx.

Cool

dashco,

Sounds like you have a serious problem. I'm no transmissio guru but I have a few ideas.

Check your TV cable. Does it move freely?
Does the transmission have enough oil?
Will it move at any RPM in overdrive? If not then its a serious problem. A valve may be stuck in the valve body.
Check the linkages from the lever to the transmission. You may have a loose lever.
Did you some type of maintenance before this problem? Or did it just start up one day?

Hey, thanx for your ideas and your getting back to us. It doesn't move in any RPM in overdrive and the problem has been happening since we got it about a year ago. I'll check the TV cable. Thank you for your ideas. It really helped. Would you suggest taking it to a transmission specialist? Like I said, thanx.

Cool

dashco,

Sounds like your transmission is shot. If you take it to any transmission shop they will simply tell you to rebuild it. Only other thing you can do before rebuilding it is to remove the valve body and check it throughly. This would be a good time to install a shift kit too. If the kit install does not work and you cleaned out the valve body really good then rebuilding or swapping it out are your options.
