69 396 Oil Filter Question
Hello All,
I went to change the oil in my newly acquired truck, 1969 GMC 396 and then I noticed it had a large canister style filter on it. I then went to NAPA Auto and told them that I need a filter for this truck. They looked it up and said it should have a spin on filter, no canister style after 1967???? They told me someone must have changed out the motor, but this truck only has 36K original miles and I know it is also the original motor. Anyone have any additional info on this? I am looking in my '69 shop manual and the crankcase capacities chart specifies a REPLACEABLE ELEMENT for the 396, adding that it takes 2-quarts of oil for that filter/cannister. 427 is the same thing.
From my own experience selling parts, I can tell you that there are parts people and there are people who know parts. With all of the computer-aided parts selling that we have to tolerate these days, my money says your parts person is just not a knowledgeable parts person. Oh sure, he/she can read the screen, but give them a paper parts book and see what they do. According to my book, your engine is right. Tell 'em to sell you the correct filter and quit trying to philosophize about the finer points of old truck engines.

Even though NAPA is generally more acurate than the chain stores, there books and computers are way wrong on a lot when it comes to these old trucks. They don't even SHOW a big block in 72 for c/20 suburbans... only in the C/10.
either 69 or 70 was the chainge over year on the oil filter. You can take your filter off, clean it up, and look for a number, but honestly, I would get an adapter personally, make it a spin on. Last edited by Longhorn Man; 10-06-2008 at 07:22 PM. |
