Re: Pitman Arm Removal

Mine is one step forward and two steps back. I need a second one to beat the crap out of when something goes wrong with the main one.

Re: Pitman Arm Removal

install puller tighten up then wack the puller stud hard with heavy hammer then tighten again wack wth hammer //the tension on the arms combined with the shock of the blows with the hammer just a little movement each time till it breaks loose

Re: Pitman Arm Removal

You gotta try this stuff sometime guys. I is a welder/engineer and am using it more and more. Great stuff to have on the shelf/ in the tool box. Might be just what you need, oh and what cdowns said.

Re: Pitman Arm Removal

they ALWAYS come off easy for me.
I use a cuttoff wheel to make a slit in the arm almost to the splines being carefull to not hit the box. then I use a puller and it slides off real easy. no pounding or other form of abuse involved.

Re: Pitman Arm Removal

I guess I got lucky when I changed the pitman on my '71, hooked the three jaw up and turned it with a breaker until the pitman popped lose. Brute force won that day (probably didnt hurt that the dang thing was already tryng to work its way off). My major headache was the dang idler arm but alittle "liquid red wrench" aka blow torch helped with that.

Re: Pitman Arm Removal

I have found that by using Kroil and if practical, heat, you can get almost anything apart.

I had to use my torch on the idler arm too. Filled up the garage with smoke, it was awesome.
I feel bad laying so much abuse on something directly tied to the steering box. Oh well you gotta do what you gotta do
