1970 K10 front hub question

I have a bad thump in my front hub. I need to remove it for a visual inspection. Can anyone send or post me a picture of the front hub exploded? Or mabe tell me how to remove it. I have tools and am mechanically inclined but I just started to take it apart and have reached a point that I can't figure out what to remove next to get the thing to come off. Thanks in advance for any and all help!

Re: 1970 K10 front hub question

Is this disk or drum?

did you take the lockouts off?

if so then you need to go to autozone and get a chevy spindle nut socket (pic below). $10 to buy or you can return it when done..

There are two of these nuts with a collar in between them. Once that's off your outer bearing comes off and the hub as well (if the brake caliper is off)

Re: 1970 K10 front hub question

no problem, I had to do mine, pay attention to setting the bearing pre-load and locking the spindle nuts back down.

This is the other option for the spindle nuts but runs about $150, I passed on that one...

Re: 1970 K10 front hub question

Well I got it off and everything looks ok. My problem is I get a thumping, banging noise when I am in 4WD under load. I had a 72 GMC 4X4 and this happened to it. It has been years but I thought it was the hub that stripped. I am guessing that if the hub is ok then it must be deeper. Do you think it could be something in the axel itself? Do I have to remove the spindle and yoke ? remove the cover and remove the short front axle? Could this problem be in that shaft, or could it just be bad UJOINTS? I guess when I take the spindle off I will see if the ujoints are bad before going farther.

Re: 1970 K10 front hub question

remove the 6 nuts holding the spindle, there are needle bearings inside the spindle as well.

U-joints are cheap and you can pull the axle out after removing the spindle... no C-clips like in the rear axle. Could be u-joints or something in the carrier (bearings, etc.) or dirveshaft / TC I guess... hard to tell...

The spindle may not come off easily, I had to take a BFH and a piece of wood to it, then some assist with an air chisel....be careful on the bearings surfaces and the threads... It's a tight fit in the knuckle...

Re: 1970 K10 front hub question

Well I finally got around to pulling the front axle on the passenger side. That is the side that was making all the noise while in 4 wheel drive. It sounded like it was slipping in and out of 4 wheel drive while under load. This caused a loud continuous banging noise while under load. The splines on the axel look fine and the u-joints look new. I remember when I bought the truck last year the guy said he had put allot of money into the front and rear axles. Almost $2000. It also came with heavy duty drive shafts from a 4X4 shop. At this point I have it all apart and I hate to put it back together without fixing the problem. The issue is I do not know what to look at next. Could it be the warn lockout hub? Maybe it was not screwed in all the way? I am grabbing for straws here. I still have to put a clutch in it after I fix this problem. I need to get er done before the snow flies. I plow my driveway and my shop driveway with this beast.
Thanks for any help
