tilt steering columns

I had originally posted a thread in the 47-59 section (I have a 52 Chevy) about tilt steering columns that would basically bolt right in (has a 2" column tube diameter). Someone had posted that they used a column out of a 68 Chevy Pickup, which bolted in using the stock upper column mount. Though theirs was not tilt, they mentioned that one with tilt may bolt up the same.

My question for all you 67-72 owners and fanatics is, I have seen many tilt columns w/ column shifts but I haven't seen any tilt columns for floor shift trucks (at least looking at project pictures on here, have yet to hit the salvage yards). Is there such a thing or was tilt only for trucks with column shift.

Thanks!

Re: tilt steering columns

The van tilt will be the cheapest for you, although you would have to modify it for a floor shift.
There is a stock floor shift tilt, but they are rare and pricey. They tend to go in the $400 - $500 range.

Re: tilt steering columns

well hopefully the owner of the auto yard near me doesn't know that. In fact he doesn't have a set price for anything and he don't care what you get it out of, doesn't even see. All you do is bring it to him when your done and ask how much. His way of pricing things is he stares at the part for a few minutes, thinks for a few more, decides how much value it depreciated because of rust and such and then spits out a number. Usually very reasonable. Basically what he would get for scrap.

Is the pickup column the same as the van? I assume that these columns that have the shift linkage have a slightly larger diameter (about 2-1/2). Shouldn't be too hard to find a usable mount.

Re: tilt steering columns

The 67-72 auto and manual columns have the same diameter tubes. The late 60's - 81 van columns have the same size tube at the 67-72 columns. I have never heard of a van column with a floor shift. Some older motorhomes had the same diameter tube as well.
Some people buy the van tilt and then shave the shifter off it. At a junk yard you can usually find the van tilts for $25 - $50.

Boardmember Yukon Jack has a shaved van tilt in his silver truck. You may want to PM him on the specifics of shaving the tilt. Here is his thread: http://www.67-72chevytrucks.com/vboa...d.php?t=212227

Re: tilt steering columns

I used a van one once, ground the shifter part off and removed the indicator. Filled the holes with filler. 15 years later, you couldn't tell. I'm sure there's a better way, but it worked for me for a long time.

Re: tilt steering columns

Anyone know what was the first year that gm put a tilt column in a truck? a car?

And for those very big automotive history buffs, what was the first year for a tilt column in any make?
