Small step towards my rust repair

I decided a while back I was ready to fix the rust on my truck and get it painted. I have had all the rust repair pieces for it for some time now including a factory AC system. Evaluating my truck I decided finding a donor '72 AC cab was the best sollution, I wouldn't need to cut any holes for the AC in my non-AC cab, my cab has some rust in the upper right hand corner on the windshield channel I wasn't looking forward to fixing, plus I could continue to drive my truck while doing the rust repair and seriously cut down on down time.
I knew I wanted to find a '72 Cheyenne cab so I wouldn't need to cut cargo lamp and headliner holes. After some searching my buddy found this truck on craigslist for $500.



He needed the five lug stuff off it for a new truck of his so we split the cost and hauled it to his place. It's a factory BB truck, the motor and trans were gone but all the accessories were there with brackets. Including the motor mounts and stands!
The front clip and bed are no good, but the hood, cab, and headgate are in good shape, so I'll end up using them on my truck.

Here's what two hours in a fully equipped shop got for us. It sure is handy having a forklift.





Now I just need to get the cab to my place, I've already cleared out a spot in the garage for it. I'm pretty excited to get going on this project. I plan on getting the cab media blasted this month or right after the first of the year.

Back to my buddy, he has a nice stash of trucks and parts. I've posted his maroon '71 Super here before. These are two of his other trucks (but not the only ones).





'67 big window with a fresh 350/700R4 combo.

And his new truck, a very clean, untouched survivor '69, 350, auto truck. He put the tach and tilt in and will be using the 5-lug stuff on this truck along with a 4/6 and some rallys.

Dang Chris. I didn't know you were already into another project. A well tooled shop can make a tough job easy er. Your bud has a couple of nice trucks. That 67 sits nice and red is a favorite and the 69 is lookin good too. I agree, put a drop and some rallys on it and just drive it.

Now that my wife's truck is close enough, and I've helped two of my friends with their trucks, I figured it was time to get underway on mine. Since I have this extra cab now and my truck can stay running I'm not putting any time table on the project.
The worst part is I'll need to find a driver when my truck is done.

I always have a hard timemaking that break from original driver "it is what it is" truck to tearing into it to end up with a beauty you enjoy building and can be proud of.And,it`s tough to give up it`s service.So,I do like you are and do as much off the truck before getting into the truck itself.Good plan.Especially the no time table thing.But,I`m sure it will pick up once you get into it.

I have a question for your friend...Got trucks?

That is exactly what I go through also, that is the main reason for no time table. I'm afraid I won't use the truck as much as I do now. The time the truck is down is going to be really hard on me, I even have and extra hood, headgate, and driver's fender so far to help speed it up.

The usual for around here, rockers, cab corners, and a small piece of the floor by the kick panel.

My buddy just finished lowering his new truck so I'll get some pics next time I see it.

Allright, since Nate brought this back up to the top again, I guess I'll update it, I don't want anyone thinking I'm not getting anything done and spending my time on here flapping my gums.
Since last time, I got the cab stripped down, dirtball and I (mostly dirtball) built a cab dolly so I can move my new prize around the garage, and I have removed the passenger rocker and have the new one fitted. Now I can get to work on the floor piece by the kick panel. I will be waiting to do anymore until after the big tri-state swap meet on Feb 7-8, Kenny's Trucks is there and I can get my repair panels without paying shipping.





These things are taking over my garage!!!

Wow, that was a really nice cab to start with! The bed didn't look too bad??? Did you totally scrap it (other than the tailgate)?

I have quite a collection of parts to work on while leaving my truck alone too (short fleet bed, tailgate, "new to me" front fenders and hood, and doors.) I keep telling my wife I just want a short fleet and that the other parts are to replace the aftermarket stuff, but really, all I need is to sneak home a frame and cab and I'll have a second truck

I suggest you proceed with extreme caution, she may already be on to you. Could be waiting for just the right moment to wack you with the frying pan and ask for a remodeled kitchen.

Actually the cab, hood and headgate were the only body parts on the whole truck that weren't beat.

I saved the doors for checking rocker fitment and when I'm done with them I'll toss them too, they're not so much beat as they are rusty.

Thanks, I definitely appreciate it. The mag is the March '06 issue of Classic trucks, they had an article on replacing rockers in our trucks and I like to use that article for reference for all the spot welds.

Sounds like fun, you should post up some pics. His and hers trucks can be a lot of fun and other times it can really test a marriage!

Great looking cab to start with. Noticed that you had braced the jams and appears have a rocker on...are you planning on the entire floorpan replacement or just being extra precautious? I will be starting my rust repair here shortly myself. I ordered Eb's instructional videos so hopefully end of this week or somewhere next week I will be getting them in the mail to view and then I can jump in head first.

I have seen his work on here, it looks excellent, the dvd's are supposed to be super helpful.

I was just being extra precautious, I ended up doing the patch that was full length front to back of the cab and comes in about 4'' from the inner rocker.
I didn't think anything would move but I wasn't sure.

I'm defitiely watching your progress on this one. wow, I didn't know you had rust issues with your truck. would your wife have realized you stole the cab from her truck??!!
