I have had good luck with the trim tape. Cleaning is essential,
obviously. I got my tape from Chevy Duty and have had some tape on for 5 years with no problems.

On the upper strips, we use fine steel wool and chrome polish to clean them up, (sometimes paint remover is needed to remove overspray). After cleaning thoroughly, I wipe the surfaces with alcohol at least twice. I use 1/8" 3M tape to tape up the two "bead" shapes and 3/4" 3M tape to tape up the sides. I then spray with Rustoleum Flat Black. Etching paint will hold better but it seems to last with the Rustoleum if you clean it well.
