kids these days...
A little over a year ago I bought my truck. After taking it by the car wash on the way home I began messing with it in the driveway. I was kinda pissed when some kids, probably junior high, walked by after getting off the bus and said, "What's that piece of junk?" I nicely replied, "It's a truck I'm going to fix up." They laughed and kept walking. Today I had the garage up and was putting the front end on (truck was in the garage) and a few of the same kids walked by. They asked, "Are you working on a truck?" I replied, "Yeah it's the same truck you guys asked me about a little over a year ago." Their faces said it all... The look of appreciation for the classic was displayed. If only the kids would put down the video games and talk their parents into resurrecting a classic.

Re: kids these days...
me neither!
Ive always loved muscle cars (got it from my dad i geuss) even throughout the biggest rice burner fad there was. when i was 14, i wanted a fourth gen camaro, and started thinking about what i was going to drive for winter. i found the 67-72 chevy trucks. i was looking at beaters at first, but they grew better and better. now i have the my 69 shortbox as the summer hot-rod, and couldn't love it anymore. it was a father-son deal. and it easily owns all the rice burners at school, and looks way better doin it oh yeah, im 17 too.

Re: kids these days...
I agree with you. I thought I had one of my nephews interested in building a 67 SWB GMC. We tore it down about 7 years ago and it is still in pieces.
I have another nephew that lives here on the ranch and he has no interest in my old trucks. My brother asked me to help him build one, but the nephew wanted no part of it. Hell, I just wish someone around here was interested in these old junkers like I am. Good thing Crown'n'Seven likes to keep me company in the shop!! john

Re: kids these days...
I had a young punk pull up at the light here while back and kept lurching at the light. The first one, I thought, "No.....you know better and tires are expensive."
The second light, I just couldn't help it and I gave in. The light turned green and the old 350 made those old Firestones bark. He wasn't so cocky at the next light, and I went back to cruising to the house. I have to admit, I enjoyed putting him in his place. I can't wait until I get the $$$ to get her painted like I want. She turns heads as it is......... My truck is a classic 1972 Cheyenne..... My wife.....is a classy 1971 model...... I'm a '65.......surely I'm a classic too. LOL! Greg |

67slammer, the hood hinges came from ebay. I'm sure there's people on here that do powder coating, post on the WTB board.

Re: kids these days...
Up until 4yrs ago I guess i was the same as those typical kids until I bought my first project. Dad always had a 74 ford truck in real good condition but we (four brothers) never liked old vehicles til now. I bought the 69 about a yr ago and my 3 yr old has claimed it already (hell yeah!) Another on the way so I will probably look for another project soon

Re: kids these days...
im 17 and i have loved these trucks as long as i can remember and my parents say as long as ive been alive, the first time i ever saw a 67-72 was the day i was brough home from the hopsital in my dads freshly restored 71 that he bought and restored for me (his first born) in under 9 months, he bought the truck after he found out i was gonna be born and it was finished 3 weeks before my birth i have had a rice burner cause i needed the mpg and i have had quite a few 67-72 chevy trucks and my friends used to think i was nuts for working on an old truck instead of playing soccer or t-ball or video games, at the high school i will be graduating from this spring ( i moved out of the city to a small town the summer before i started high school) and there are more kinds intrested in old cars there then kinds intrested in video games or rice burners,a few vehicles that are regularly in the school prking lot or are projects of my classmates are an 81 el camino, a 1970 chevelle, an 86 k10, a 77 scottsdale, a 75 c10 swb, an 36 ford rat rod coupe(spring time only)
a smallblocked 91 s10 drag truck, a 53 gmc, a 49 chevy, a 69 chevelle and a 71 chevelle, a 68 impala custom top lowrider, a 67 gmc factory ac small window, a 70 k10 with a 454, and my trucks in my opinion its city kids who are into the rice burners and video games

Re: kids these days...
I'm 21, and have always been into old iron - plain and simple. I went through 2 or 3 project trucks before my '69 came along and amounted to the daily driver she is now. Everyone at the college knows it, along with most people in town. Recognition is nice, unless it's from the wrong people. lol.
Now, we'll see how the Chevy II turns out. Haha, I kinda refuse to drive anything thats new. And honestly, girls dig the classics more than the plastics. Great looking truck, and way to make a transformation. -Sam.

Re: kids these days...
That is great progress ! I hope to be that far along in one year. My 5 yr old son keeps asking "when are you gonna paint my truck ?" I hope someday he drives the same truck when hes old enough.

Re: kids these days...
ive always had a love for old GM trucks! when i was 16 my dad gave me the family 68 lwb and later that summer i bought a 72 gmc jimmy! that was two years ago and the Jimmy will be done this winter after a complete restoration and i will be starting on the 68 this summer. ive also own a 67 chevelle malibu but gave that up for the jimmy. me and my friends are always working on old cars and we love it! so i say there is hope in the youth of america when it comes to classic trucks

Re: kids these days...
I love muscle/classic cars, (and trucks) but I also enjoy modern cars, not ricer but European cars, they are so refined and drive so nicely. My GLI handles like it is on rails, 0-60 in 6 seconds, and gets 30 MPG, all things my truck fails miserably at. And it gets the same amount of attention. Gotta love the look on some ones face as you rumble by in your bright red Chebby though =]

Re: kids these days...
I got rid of the TV about a year ago (no joke) and my kids are much better off. They actually play outside unlike most other kids in the neighborhood. They are showing interest in cars/trucks too. Here's my 5yo learning to tac-weld with the "close-eyes method." We scratch built a sling-shot last weekend (hopefully I don't end up regretting that...).
On the rice burners, well I just picked up an S2000 drivetrain for my 66 Sunbeam so I guess I can't really chime in on that subject... Although I did blow doors on a WRX between stoplights in the Tahoe once (it has a built 476) Don't worry about the lack of appreciation from the younger generations. They eventually learn what's truly cool as you just described. |
