Are Our Trucks Hard To Find? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I hear a lot of talk about the older trucks getting hard to find and I'm sure in some areas they are. On my trip to Texas and back I saw no less than 25 '67-'72 Chevy and GMC trucks sitting along the road and behind houses/sheds/garages. We missed our turn at Langley, Oaklahoma and had to drive on down through Spavinaw and Salina to get to Pryor. I saw at least 10, 60-72 Chevy and GMC pickups along that stretch of road alone. There was what looked to be a pretty nice Suburban in North Houston at Miracle Auto Parts. He was asking $5000 for it. It had been re-done but had some damage on the passenger side. I didn't crawl under it but the interior looked pretty nice and it had a tilt wheel. I don't think it was worth $5000 but if a guy could pick it up for $3500 or $4000 and had the parts to fix it I think it would make a nice truck. My son-in-law is supposed to take some pics of it and e-mail them to me… There was one sitting along the road in Vienna, Mo (not too far South of 72blckbuty) that didn't look too bad. I know you can't really tell what they are like by driving by and I also know that some of them would not be for sale but my point is that there are still plenty of these trucks around if you get off the beaten path and do some looking. I know about the pics but if I stopped to take pics of every truck I saw I would still be on my way to Texas instead of down & back already….

What are your thoughts on this?

Well, here in AZ they are everywhere.

When I say everywhere, most of them are beat, daily drivers. Only a select few have been restored. You can still find them for sale and still plenty of parts out there for them, either new or salvage.

I think finding a nice truck to start a project on will be a challange no matter where you live. Most of the trucks out there that are in excellent shape have already been snatched up for the restoration block.

when ever i go for a road trip i always spot a few, i dont see to many nicer ones around mn or at least as much as i used to but i seem to have no problem finding any, hell i know of a town out in northwestern nebraska that they was at least 1 67-72 truck, blazer, burban, or likewise sitting in every back yard, i have that town circled on the map in my dads suburban, he swears the look on my face was like a dog who just saw the pheasant fly infront of the truck

, when we got close enough to start seein vehicles in this town

there are still plenty of our trucks to be had out there, and there not always the rusted and banged up ones either you just gotta get off your a$$ and look for them

There are zillions.They are for sale all over the place.I think it`s been getting harder every year to find the ones just sitting around that can be had for the taking or really cheap.It`s harder to find one the owner doesn`t have a high value on.And,getting harder to find them solid and unmolested,too.

LockDoc...interesting post. I too see many 67-72 trucks still out and about...but...I wonder how may are BB's or swb 4x4 loaded trucks? It seems that the more desirable trucks have been snatched up and are being restored or in the wings ready to be restored. When I say "more desirable" I mean highly factory optioned swb or lwb trucks. I too would like to hear more input.

I agree with Dwane. However that being said, the "loaded" trucks can easily be built for a small price. My truck was bone stock when it was made. No A/C, no PS, no PB and a 3 speed manual. Now it has PS, PB, 4 speed Auto and I'm working on adding A/C before this summer.

It is getting harder to find the loaded trucks for sale that are in good shape. But I suppose anything is possible if you have enough time and/or money. I still think that a project truck with restoration costs totaling 15-20K is a VERY good price for a "new" truck that is one of a kind!

Longhorn Man makes a good point. I travel throughout Oh, In, Ky, and Tn. So I am talking about more than Ohio.

Here in Santa Maria, there really aren't that many - it's a town of 100,000 or so, and I recognize most of them I see, probably 15 or so that prowl on a regular basis.

Here in Mineola I know of at least 8 that are driven most of the time & have pretty nice paint

I currently own five 67s & my dad has three 67s, a 69 burb, a 68 & a 72

So I dont think they are hard to find... not as common as square bodys, but still a lot of em out there

Longbed trucks here are plentiful, but shortbeds, blazers, and burbs now that's a different story.

I very seldom see any 67-72's down here in Miami, FL. I know of a couple only from the board here surrounding Miami but that's it. Kind of a shame really.

Up here in my neck of the woods, our trucks are pretty much like horse poop; they're just all over the ranch.

Now having said that; unfortunately, most of them are DD's & beaters that look like horse poop. But the owners of the ones that are for sale think they have Barrett-Jackson quality stuff, & they are sitting on potential gold mines.
Many are nothing more than drivable parts trucks at best.

Ya, it's sad that they value our trucks fairly high, but you can't sell them for that unless they are REALLY rare or REALLY done up. The low retail when I bought my 67' was 8K and high was 35K. I'd be lucky to get 5-6K with the way my truck is now and I think it looks pretty nice. I know a guy out here that owns 4 67-72's and between his neighbors there are about 8-9 on his block.

+1 on this one, I might have seen total about 15 of our trucks in the past few years which is when I started interest in these bad boys. We see a hell of alot of old cars around I mean at any given car show or car cruise 150-200 older vehicles will show up and you always see restored vehicles now vehicles or trucks behind houses are non existing.

well in the last two years...i have seen a few right here in town. I have 4 of them. I am probably the only one in town with more then one.

You're right. Get off the main roads and look. This is how I find most of the vehicles I find.

There are plenty around--with a lot gone to the crusher in the past year but with salvage price down right now, that problem may be postponed a bit. What drives me nuts is when I see one on the hook -on it's way to the crusher---saw one this summer--a 72 cheyenne super big block---on a flat bed--rough buttttt---I couldn't catch the guy as i was on my way to the Dr's. It looked complete and was probably worth $1500. in parts alone!! Unfortunately in our economy, most collectagle or classic vehicle prices are down by 30% or more!! NOW IS THE TIME TO BUY!! We may never see lower prices on our trucks then today. With gas down to $1.25-1.50--best opportunity to cruse too! Huck

For the most part they simply don't exist in my neck of the woods.

There is a guy down the road from me that has one, but other than that I'm pretty sure I'm the only one around with a 67-72.

My 69 K20 I bought in Nebraska and had shipped to me here in NY, beacuse the one I did have was rusted junk and every other truck I looked at was junk as well.

I think you are going to see more in rural areas and small towns. I live in a area where you still see a lot of older guys still using them as their daily drivers.

Yes,they are getting hardto find in wrecking yards today. 10 years ago, there were 5-6 each trip. Today you are lucky to find 1. The trucks that would have gone to the wrecking yards are now being sold as is. Seems like you are forced to buy the whole vehicle (mainly beat up) for a few desirable parts.
