There was a thread on here a couple of years back about making a fiberglass reproduction from a nos door. As someone had located and purchased one and was thinking of copying it. They couldnt get enough people interested in it and gave up on it last I remember.

I was actually talking to my wife earlier this week about wanting to start reprducing some of the things that aeren't bieng made due to low demand. Really want to work in the classic car industry for myself and there are parts that are needed but not made. I was mainly thinking of making suburban only parts. Thought I would start by making fiberglass repros of 47-54 suburban/panel rear fenders, see how that wen't and go from there. Really had the wind taken out of my sails when I saw someone was already doing it. Still might makem anyway.
Anyhow if there is a demand for these, I could try making them out of fiberglass. I really dont want to make fiberglass repro sheetmetal but until I could gain the funds to do it with steel I am kind of stuck. No matter what I am going to start tinkering with fiberglass mould making for re making truck parts, even if it is just for myself. My dad used to make fiberglass race car bodies and I am a stickler for details so I think this idea could blossom. Last edited by 1956cameo; 12-04-2008 at 04:58 AM. |

a company used to make them, but with only like 5% or so of the trucks that could have it did, there isn't enough of a market. They were super expensive, and hardly sold any.

well i sure as heck could use one, its like one of the only rusty spots on my truck and ats damaged. I might just shave it....Are they rare? or fairly common

only produced for 3 years on this generation, and only avalible on LWB fleetsides... possibly only 3/4 ton and one tons... not sure on that. Of the models that could get it, only 5% or so got them.... that's still a lot, but yeah, somewhat rare.
A rust free one is rare. |

all I know, is at $350 used (give or take), it's something to think about. I know there are some sheetmetal commandos out there that could handle it.

I have seen them on 1/2 tons too andy. Pretty hard to find nice doors, but there just isn't a big demand for them that I've seen.

My '71 Cheyenne (1/2 ton long bed) had one. It was bent, rusted, the lock was missing and the latch was broken. I never could find another one, and since i really didn't care for it anyways, i just welded a piece of sheet metal over the hole, slapped some bondo on it, sanded it down, primed it and called it good.

I always thought they were cool. I used to really want one. The reason I had always wanted one was to use it as a battery box. That way I could mount one of those long hi amp tractor type batteries in it. It was just an idea I had awhile back.

I think the fiberglass one was about $175.It seems if the mold is still around(that`s where the cost comes from),it would be very worthwhile to reproduce.It`s not like steel where you need to stamp out so many pieces just to pay for the dies.Fiberglass can be made to order in a small shop.I think the guy just started offering them too early.It was 15 or so years ago.

i was checking interest in this project some time ago- i have the NOS door for a pattern--but there was very little interest in them at that time. i also have a rustfree used door but i have two trucks with factory toolboxes so mine are both going to be used at some point--i hope.

I have tried to have these reproduced and have come up empty handed. The manufacturers just don't think that there is enough call for them to pay for the tooling that it takes to reproduce them. I have a couple of them here, one that is listed now on ebay, Item #300280493043 and another that is the best one that I have ever found. I was hanging on to them to have one reproduced and another for a project that never materialized. The first couple of pics is the one listed on ebay and the second one is the pristeen one. I still haven't decided totaly if I will sell the second one, since it didn't sell when I offered it up in the parts board. WES
