Correct Outside Mirrors? 1969

I have been thinking about getting rid of the big 3 point mirrors on my truck and going with the factory sport correct ones. My truck is a Custom, Not sure which ones are correct tho. Are they square? or round? Im sure with anything else NOS is better than repo. Does anyone know what mirrors are going for nowadays? AND is there a template out there to drill the new holes?

Re: Correct Outside Mirrors? 1969

I would check your SPID if you are trying to do a stock resto. I have the location (from the GM Assembly Manual) for the round, long-arm, triangle-base mirrors that were probably the stock standard option.

Re: Correct Outside Mirrors? 1969

These are the correct mirrors for my truck. I am 3rd owner and they have never been changed. I am going to run into problems with my new garage door and need to get some smaller mirrors. I was hoping that the small square ones were correct but I don think so. I think they are for 70-72 only but I might have to go with them cause the 69 ones were round and not very appealing.

Re: Correct Outside Mirrors? 1969

The GM Assembly Manual does not show the EXACT location of the sport style mirror that you are trying to mount. It shows the dimensions to a reference point but no location for the reference point! Go figure! This manual has NO page numbers, NO index and is about 2" thick! Best to get the reference dimensions from a board member that already has them mounted. Sorry that I could not help.

Re: Correct Outside Mirrors? 1969

On the stock single-arm mirrors, the head is round. There will be a triangular plate that fits to the inside of the door, which will allow you to screw the mirror support screws into it. I found my plates, laying down inside the door shells, after a previous owner installed some aftermarket mirrors that were popular at the time (late 80's), but not to my liking. I'm running peep mirrors, which means I can only get a peep at the traffic behind me, not a big picture. Such is style, huh?

Re: Correct Outside Mirrors? 1969

On these trucks you could option different type of mirrors, but as ChevLoRay says the round ones were the stock mirrors. Both of my trucks had those type when I got them. I think you can get all the stuff for them at the different vendors.

Manes Trucks has the backing plate if you do decide to go with the original stock mirrors. You will need it to mount them so you won't damage your sheetmetal.

http://www.manestruckparts.com/store...Category_ID=17

btw: The ones I have seen that were stock were painted the same color as the truck.

Re: Correct Outside Mirrors? 1969

If the correct ones are round then No thanks. If the ones pictured above(square ones are genuine gm) then I think I will go with those. Can anyone tell me if the ones pictured are 70-72 truck mirrors for sure. I assume that there are NO more choices staying with GM stock truck mirrors? I know I could go with a billitt aftermarket but its not what Im after.

Re: Correct Outside Mirrors? 1969

These are called "Below Eye Line"mirrors. (I think) 69/70 were differrent than 71/72 mirrors. I'm not sure what the exact differences are but there is some deviations between the styles.

Re: Correct Outside Mirrors? 1969

Well Future plans are to paint the truck. Paint is 22 years old now and showing its age. The mirrors are origanaly white and I had them chromed at one time. I do like the sport mirrors that came on these trucks thats why I want to stick with the style that came on these trucks. I am looking at the ones in the pics but not sure if they are GM oem NOS?

Re: Correct Outside Mirrors? 1969

The little square mirrors shown in the first post were the "standard" mirrors that came only on any 71-72 year truck that didn't have another style mirror listed on the SPID. They were not used from the factory before 71 and there is no option code for them. They are now referred to as "sport" mirrors but it was just the standard cheap mirror used f nothing else was ordered.

The sport mirrors look nice but are almost useless in my opinion. I put them on my dad's truck and it's almost like not having none at all on the passengers side. I even cheated and slid that one back further. I wish the mirror arms were a little taller because that would help alot!

I have the small ones on mine also but have always liked the ones on kelsfine69' truck much better. When I work my doors over someday I am going to switch them.

Re: Correct Outside Mirrors? 1969

Oh Great...Im wanting to switch to something smaller and your telling me there useless LOL... Well i have had these mirrors for 22 years and now the truck is \ well a hobby and not a daily driver. I agree if I was going to drive it everyday then yes the mirrors are great. But for a weekend cruiser I think the sport ones will be ok...I hope. I was hoping that the square ones were offered on the 69s but oh well 70 is close enough, its not like the truck is totaly stock.

Are the ones pictured the correct ones?? I just dont want to buy chevelle ones or whatever

Re: Correct Outside Mirrors? 1969

Don't be discouraged! They are not useless and do look cleaner when installed and are very popular, its just harder to use them as they are quite small.
Put them on and enjoy!
The mirrors you have pictured are correct for 71 and 72, not 69 or 70. I think stllookn is right on about the round long arm mirrors with the triangle base being correct for your 69.

Re: Correct Outside Mirrors? 1969

My 71 has the small square mirrors. The truck had had a shell on the bed it's entire life, before I got it. I don't see how the PO drove it 30 years without putting a dent in it.

I don't know if you are familiar with the FAQ forum or not. Scroll down to the bottom of this page and you will see the "Forum Jump" box. Click on the little down arrow on the right side of the box and scroll down to "FAQ Truck Tech". On that page go down to "Thread / Thread Starter: FAQ Index thread". When you get into that scroll down to the "FAQ's Paint and Body Related" In that section you will see "Sport Mirror Mounting”.

I could have just posted a direct link but there is a lot of good info in the FAQ section and now the new people that read this thread will know how to get to it. Thanks to Krue for indexing the FAQ's

I can't help you on the price of NOS but the repos I've seen looked pretty good. I've never bought a set though.

Re: Correct Outside Mirrors? 1969

My truck was built with the 71-72 style small mirrors, but the PO installed Below Eyline type mirrors so he could tow his boat. He used one of the existing mirror holes at the top and drilled two holes for the lower. I purchased a NOS set of original style to the truck and filled the holes until I repaint the truck with stainless finish washers and screws. The NOS mirrors I bought came with an install pattern that I can locate and scan for you if you need it. Just PM me and I can give you the info.

I agree. Just got one for the driver's door from a local vendor, and it looks great. Chrome base with a stainless mirror head. I'll grab one for the other side later.
