Lightbulb diesel conversions

I see there aren't many diesel conversions on the board... the ones that are are all 6.2/6.5 GM's and cummins 6bt.... has anyone done anything different? 4bt? something else? Post links if you want... any info, builds, etc that people have come across would be great. Thanks.

Re: diesel conversions

Here is a 67 with a boat anchor 350 diesel.

I think 72Freak is going to swap a 4BT into his MUTT in the next few years.

I will be doing a 4bt conversion on a 72 c30 here soon, still gathering parts for it.

Re: diesel conversions

I have ideas running around in my head of doing a 3/4 ton 67-72 suburban with a diesel for my next build.

What is 4bt, 4at, 6bt?????

Has anyone swapped in a Duramax?

I want reliability and fuel economy..... If i wanted over 1000ft-lbs, I wouldnt be putting it in a classic frame... I would be putting it in a 2 ton truck. I personally dont see a point ni making ridic power numbers.... your truck still wont be fast, and it will end up breaking some very expensive parts....

esp when you can have a super reliable vehicle, and put a sportbike in the bed... which is what I do.... stock my bike runs 10.50s... so what would be the point in thowing $5k+ at a motor/drivetrain when i can buy a bike for that same $? just my $0.02.

I agree with everything said except "your truck still wont be fast". Duramax trucks with a little tuning are very fast, and still very reliable. I know several trucks that run the 11's and 12's are used as tow rigs and daily drivers. The Allison transmission and 14 bolt rearend are reliable even with big HP and TQ. With that being said, they aren't as good on fuel as the 4BT, 6AT or even the 6.2/6.5's. I've had 6.2's in 1/2 ton trucks that got high 20's all day long. I will be shocked if my C-30 average at least 20 mpg based on the other 6.2/6.5 trucks I've owned.

Re: diesel conversions

Ya it would be fast, and it could go in the classic frame but a stock frame would probably twist pretty good.

Re: diesel conversions

Okay, a 6bt is a cummins 6 cyl turbo charged, out of a dodge or a variety of equipment including Ingrasoll 400 CFM towable air compressors. A 4bt is cummins 4 cyl turbo charged, they came in a lot of delivery vans, such as bread trucks. A 6bta is a 6 cyl turbo charged after cooled engine. No such thing as a 6at or 4at. The "A" is simply to denote whether the engine has an after cooler or not.

WRONG!

The 6BT and 6AT are two totally different engines. The 6AT is smaller in cu in and physical size and fits a lot easily in these trucks. There is no 4AT.

Is the 6AT smoother than the 4BT? The 4BT will shake the teeth out of your head.

No, their was a 4AT too!

I put a 6AT in my C-20............Not a 6BT power house, but does well. Runs silky smooth for a diesel, and makes alot of noise(Mine has a stack on it), but inside the truck with the windows up, you can barely hear/feel it!

Ah, I stand corrected. I searched a little for a 4AT, and I've never heard of one, but I knew for sure there was a 6AT. And you're right, the 6AT's I've seen run as smooth as V8 diesels. The 4BT vibrates terribly as djw32 said.
