Cab media blasted

This was the best money spent so far. I got the complete floor welded in and now I got my cab blasted with crushed glass. I still have some work to do to the cab but I put a coat of primer on it to stop any flash rust. Here are a few pics unloading and after primer.

Re: Cab media blasted

Looks nice and clean and naked.

I hadn't heard of crushed glass media. Is it better than fine sand?

Off topic: Are those real wool blankets? I used to have several that got eaten up by moths. Can't find 100% wool blankets these days.

I guess the glass doesnt eat up the metal as bad as sand does. Good catch on the blankets. They are a military issue wool blanket the date on them is from the 50's. I Bought them at a garage sale for a $1 each several years ago. The people had a whole stack of them I wish I would have bought more. I mainly use them for fender covers.

Re: Cab media blasted

68gmsee try stopping by your local gaurd or reserve facilities and talk to the supply SGT. They usually have thousands of those blankets laying around, if they haven't already thrown them away. They might let you have some.

Re. crushed glass: Everyone around here uses sand so I may have to go out of town to get it done.

Re. blankets: For a $1? If they're from the 50's, they should be 100% wool. I got mine when I was in the military in the 60's and they were 100% wool then. The one's I've seen at the surplus stores are all made in other countries and are real low quality polyester blend.

When you look at the cost of grinder disc, wire wheels, and time its a real bargain. Every crack and crevice is spotless when you get it back. You could never get to all the corners with a wire wheel.

Re: Cab media blasted

I media blasted my Chevelle. It was worth the money. The guy in Orlando Fl uses plastic beads if I remember correctly. People tell me that it does not heat up the metal like sand does. The guy did the whole car, and then sprayed a metal etching primer on it so I could get it home and to the body shop with out too much surface rust. When I get started on my Blazer I will do it again. The body shop guys love not having to do the crummy task of paint removal. The other benefit IMO is no chemicals to mess up the paint work later

Re: Cab media blasted

Got a question, you didn't have the edp blasted off...I am in the same situation with the new one piece floor and want to get my cab blasted, but not sure if the new floor should be blasted too. I have read a couple places that the edp is just put on to avoid rust when repop metal is shipped, but it should be taken down to bare metal before final paint. Believe it or not, there is a lot of rust under that edp. What does everybody else think about this?

WOW! I thought it was more like $500! Man, I'm definitely going to do that!

I didnt have the floor blasted. When I worked in a well respected paint shop in the early 90's we never removed the repop primer. We never had an issue with it either. IMO the primer on the floor was well intact.

She looks mighty nice. I'm all set up with the blaster and crushed glass but for 200 bucks I might just have to haul it over and see Jeff myself. It is just that he is so far away. HaHa.

Re: Cab media blasted

Are you planning to put all of the A/C back in your cab? The cab that I just picked up down at French Lake is an A/C cab and that part is pretty complete but man it looks intimidating. I hope you hook yours up so I can copy your work. It would be kind of neet to have a 39 year old rig with A/c working.
