To the best of my knowledge, yes. There are some benefits if you have it registered as a classic/antique that you may want to look into.

When I registered the Cameo all that was required was proof of insurance, no inspection required. There are stipulations on WHEN you can drive it such as in parades and on the weekends but that's vastly overlooked. Not one of my many friends in town have ever been pulled over for driving there classic/antique on an "off" day. I'll be driving mine daily.

I've been passing inspection for years without backup lights. I don't have mine registered as a classic, but I'm curious to know what the benefits are.

You only have to register every few years, no inspection and liability is stupid cheap. I'm not quoting numbers because I cant remember, but like I said all they ask for is proof of insurance. Proof of ownership too, of course.

60 dollars registration 5 years. No inspection required ever. I register all my junk that way.

Thats awesome and I just read that there are only driving restrictions if you reg it antique if you register it classic there is no such restriction

But to also answer your question: you don't require backup lights to pass inspection in Texas.

I was talking to our tax lady the other day, and I told her I bought a truck from out of state. I asked about the "classic" registration and she was very informative.

She went on to tell me that before I could have it registered, I had to have it inspected since it was not already registered in TX.

I always thought that the registration came first.......guess not.

Well that's weird. My tax lady said you only had 30 days after you bought it to transfer the title. I bought mine without a drive train and it still isn't on the road let alone inspected and that's been almost a year ago. I wonder what you are supposed to do in that case

I bought mine from out of state also and had to have it inspected before I could register it/transfer the title.
Tech would not pass it with no B/U lights. Sent me to fix it then come back.
I didn't register as classic because I didn't want the restrictions. Funny thing is, it's been torn apart since and hasn't been driven at all since I got the sticker.

I've never seen them check the backup lights on any of my cars. I just got two of them don this week, too!

I don't know the answer, but I know mine passed w/o them in December.

there are no restrictions as a classic just a antique

Texas does not require backup lights. I double checked the law before I took my truck inthe first time b/c I don't have backup lights.

I have had it inspected 4 more times since with no problem.

Why don't you Texan's want backup lights? There not that hard to wire.
Single wire from the fuse box to toggle switch back to the lights. Ground to the light fixture.

Since we all live in a ranch we just don't need them.

Seriously, it's not that we don't want them but sometimes you just want to get the old truck running and that's the only thing that's not working.

Happened to me when I converted to automatic on my 69. I forgot to readjust the switch and didn't realize they weren't working until after I got it inspected.

I registered my truck 2 years and a month after the original bill of sale. I just did a regular title (no classic) because no classic insurance company will cover an 18 year old, and I don't want to be SOL if I'm not driving it to their liking and a wreck happens.

The 30s days figure was in the title I think, but I wasn't taxed or charged anything for it having year old expired tags and the 2 years since the original bill os sale.. I walked with a title change and new sticker for $112.11, with a $100 dollar price on the bill of sale (you pay 6.5% of the bill of sale price in TX).

Yeah i told the lady I gave 50 dollars for my truck. It was quite a bit cheaper than paying taxes on 1000

Indeed. Texas doesn't have any regulations to require you to prove the state of it thankfully, so they'll go with just about anything on these older trucks.

...except that anything under about $300 (don't remember the exact amount) is considered a "gift" and you'd hjave to pay gift tax, which is quite a bit more. Your best bet is figuring out what the gift threshold is and claiming just a little more.

Not in my case, I had $100 down on the bill of sale.

I payed gift tax on my Firebird though (car was free, shipping from Cali was 749) and it was about 12 bucks.
