Oh yeah....back in '75-76, I was laid off from my long-term employer and went to work pulling wrenches for Sears in the auto center. They put me on the return work vehicles. The shop foreman knew what he wanted done and since I got paid by the hour, it was no biggee to me.

Anyway, there was a '73 Mercury Montego MX Brogham that had a 429 and all of the attendant bells and whistles that had been in for a tuneup because the engine would die on the road, then restart after a few minutes and run for a few more before it died again. The foreman had me to rebuild the carb, do another points/plugs/ignition system tune on it, new fuel filter and such before I ever got to road test it. But, when I did and I saw what it did....in rush hour traffic.....I knew what I had to do. I finally made it back to the shop, dropped the tank, pulled that sock off of the pickup tube and tossed it. The car never came back for engine tune problems.

It can be a puzzling thing, but once you have it resolved, you'll be happier.
