My 1972 C-10 Valentine's Day NightMare! - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

So I had planned a day of romance for my wife and I , you know candy ,flowers ,jewlery and out to dinner.
Being the sentamental fool that I am , I decided it would be nice to inlist the 1972 stepside to drive us around on this day of love.

I like to play pranks on my wife from time to time so I got a walmart employee to stop my wife as she was leaving and ask her if she forgot to pay for some thing.
And when he searched her bag he,d find "plant" the ring I got her and escort her to the office to give her the flowers and baloons to go with it.

So we pull into the walmart parking lot and I send her in for some film ,
the truck seemed hot so decided to shut it off for a few and let it cool, well when I go to turn it back on.........berrr errr errr nothing.
The truck does this somtimes when hot and so i lift the hood and adjust the ditributor so it will start more easy.
Turn the key ....click click click nothing,,,,, battery is dead.

About this time my wife comes back to the truck ready to kiss me and kill me only to find the truck dead.
So she goes back in walmart to call a friend for a jumpstart as we made a rule no cell phones on this day.
About an hour later.... the friend shows up with the thinest most toy looking jumper cables you will ever see... they looked more like hair berrets on a licorish string.
Tried againb and again ....berrr errr click nothing dead.
Meanwhile its 23 degrees out and we are not dressed for cold weather.
She thanks the friend for trying they leave and she goes back in store to fin some other help.
She askes a walmart person and a person over heard her and said he has some good cables and a nice chevy truck to jump from....o good.
She comes back tells me and back up the hood goes.
The guy pulls up gives me tons of complaments on the old truck and has the good cables home made beauties that clamp hard enough that Rosie Odonald couldnt snatch a tater chip from them and I couldnt be happier.
ready...here we go....berrr err rer grind grind grind.
Let my bump it over ...grind grind grind.

At this point I figure I better not keep trying as it will wear down the flywheels teeth and the chevy truck guy sais sounds like it already did and is upset not to get to hear the truck.
I say to heck with it I go in get a new battery and shell fire and ill save the day right....
$86.00 for a battery and a $1.96 wrench and we are back at the truck ready to fire her up and try to salvage this day.

Turn the key ...GRIND GRIND AND MORE GRIND~~~~
At this point Im sure Ive ground down the flywheel Im mad , cussing , kicking tires and I hear ..Clink!

I look under the truck and see My flywheel is fine but whats this the front of my starter is laying on the ground along with 4 other peices of starter.
So Parts stores closed I call us a ride that takes another hour to show up head home to change and get the honda to go eat and there it is......Someone slashed my tire.....

So in the end here I am typing this and if you see Cupid..........

Lol she hates the tuck now lol . and im not as populer as I thought I might be today lol. Oh well thems the brakes.
On the bright side Ill have plenty of time to cool off laying in the parking lot changing starters tomarrow lol.

Hey, it's not so bad - you could have crashed or something. And it will make a funny story some day. Heck, for us, it already is. There's always a good story with these old trucks.

I agree with Bradley, flowers and dinner on tuesday will bring back the intent and the effort you put forth, right before everything went south. And one day you'll both get a good

laugh out of it. Who knows, maybe sitting in that parking lot with the bad starter kept you out of a bad intersection somewhere. OK, enough of the mushy stuff, I think we've all lived this at least once, I did at about 105 degrees in NC a few years back. Cnut

You know what I could deal with your whole story the one that really pisses me off is the "Slashed Tire" who the F^&* would do that and why?

Get your self a new starter and install it or better yet just get the truck home park the SOB and spend the day with your fiance today. Deal with the truck tomorrow or something I am sure she will appreciate it.

Just keep in mind that sometimes(usually long into the future) having times of adversity like this become the fondest memories.Give her a do over date and fix the truck.

Thanks for all the well wish's guys but after today I replaced the starter and now she turns but wont fire.
Ive had enough, Im done fighing to own this truck it obviosly isnt meant to happen.
Im going to putt her up for sale with all the parts I have and let her go and try to move on.
I guess its true what they say... you can never go home.

Dont sell the truck, i found another hobbie to take my mind off the troubles of the hot rod. A guitar, i get made and brake the truck and go inside and play the guitar. Then break the guitar and go out and fix the truck. Then, well you get the picture. Things will work out for you. But trust me, if you get ride of the truck you will miss it. After all that is memories you are makeing with your girl. Might be the best now, but later you will both laugh about it. Just my thought though.

Yikes! That would frustrate me to no end. Who in their right mind would slash your tire?!!

Those starters must be a weak link. I had my starter do the same thing... only it popped apart while I was cranking. Scattered pieces all over the ground. Wierd.

Now you're going to have to give your sweetie lots of love on a trip with the truck so she'll have fond memories of it as well.
