another seat question - spring bottom seat worth saving?

Title of thread says it all--- i was cleaning out my storage unit today and i have a seat out of a '71 with the spring base and thinner foam cushion on top---- this foam piece is not available - only the big thick one piece foam piece is available thru LMC and a few other places.

I was wondering if it was even worth keeping ? Are most of the bench seat covers universal? I would have a local upholsterer install anything i bought, but was just wondering if this old spring bottom seat was worth keeping around.

I would keep it, a good upholstery guy can redo it, no problem.

I'm with Sinister. If you have room to store it I would hang on to it.

My seat has weak springs and I`d like to find better springs. My upholstery guy says there`s nothing we can do with these springs. Is that true?He suggested hardboard between the foam and springs.I`d think good springs would be worth saving. These seats aren`t all over the place like they always were.

Re: another seat question - spring bottom seat worth saving?

Its funny this subject came up. I just put a black leather covered spring bottom seat in my red '69, and i gotta be honest, I do not like it. It had a foam bottom seat, but I got great deal on this seat that had been freshly recovered and looks perfect, but it is too bouncy. I am probably going to put in another truck and have my buddy buckets covered for this truck. Is this a sign of weak springs or just a characteristic of the spring bottom seats (or is it just my fat arse???) As many trucks as I have, all the ones i've ever driven any significant amount have had foam bottom seats.
If it rode as good as it looks, It would great!

Re: another seat question - spring bottom seat worth saving?

that is a drool worthy seat for sure --- but if it is not firm enough -- thats the death sentence for me (265 pounds of hard rock Dolph Lundgren lookin solid steel right here)

i'll talk to the upho;lsterer guy in a day or two -- i dont want to have a situation like yours - no offense---- seat that looks like a million bucks but rides like a marshmallow

i'll probably keep this one around for a "just in case" seat though. The day you throw something out --- just start marking the calendar and there will be a use for it soon. -- off topic, i remember taking plain steel 6 lug wheels to the dump in the early 90's just because i was tired of looking at them and i had a sweet set of Chrome Reverse wheels on my ride then ---- who would have thought i would turn into a "resto geek" 17 years later and wish i had 'em back so i could throw some full wheel covers over 'em
