FAQ: Shop Truck Door Logo Tutorial - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Let me start by saying I am in no way an expert on this, as most of us who have have never done it. I wanted a faded/weathered/patina'd door logo for my old '69 beater truck, and I wan't willing to pay the prices I was quoted by a professional. Here's what I did:

STEP 1:

I started by finding a the font type and general look of what I wanted by playing around with a pic of my truck on Paint. I don't have photoshop nor know how to use it, but if you do, you're ahead of the game. Here is the basic idea of what I wanted, although I did change the wording.

After I knew what I wanted, I printed the pic and taped it to side of the truck for reference. At that point, I drew the outline of the top line of letters with a pencil. ***NOTE: If you are as ham-fisted as I am, I highly recommend doing the top line of letters first to keep from resting your hand on the bottom line of letters and smudging the pencil marks or paint. I made this mistake on my first test door!***

After I had the letters drawn out like I wanted, I painted the outline of them with white, starting from the top to the bottom for the same reason mentioned above. After I got the outline, I painted the inside of the letters.

After I let the white dry fairly well, I came back on painted the black shadowing. I just this free hand with small brush, outlining and coming back and filling it in afterwards like the white part.

***I highly recomend letter the top line totally dry in case you happen to touch it doing the bottom line!***

After it dryed, I came back and did the bottom in the same way as I did the top line.

STEP 2:

If you don't want weathered orfaded looking letters, skip this step.

After I had the letters painted, I sanded the letters with 400# grit sandpaper to give it a weathered, worn-off look. I came back with 800# grit and wet sanded it and it really looks warn off in person. The camera doesn't show it as well as you can see it person, but some of the brush strokes are evident like on old worn off hand-painted letters actually look. Its probably not for everybody, but I was pleased how it turned out.

STEP 3:

I thought, "OK dummy, you got them on one side, now how are you going to make it look the same on the other side?". After thinking about it, I decided to cheat with the good ol' printer again. I took a pic of what I did the driver's side, and printed it off and hung it on the truck again. This still didn't give me the exact proportions, so I took all the measurements from the door molding down, and from the edges of the doors and made a "window" to paint them in. I still couldn't seem to tell exactly where to start, so I taped up my printed pic just like my door and it REALLY helped. I drew them out before and did the process just like other side. My camera died befoe I got it done, but here's what I have pics of. I will post the finished when I go get batteries.

Below is my materials. I used Satin white and Flat Black Rustoleum and use one small brush for outlining the white, one small brush for outlining and filling in the black shadowing, and a bigger brush for filling in the white. I got everything at Wal Mart for around $12 or so IIRC. (It's been just about a year since I bought it

)

I'm sure there's better/easier ways to do this (actual talent would be a BIG help!

)) But this is how I did it, and if this helps someone else, I'll be happy!

I used to hand letter some trucks, and an easy way to get your artwork on the side of the truck is to use an overhead projector. I know not many people use them since the advent of the laptop and LCD projector, but I bought a pallet of them when the local college had an auction to get rid of some junk they didn't need. They can still be found, and really make it easy to project your design onto the truck in the same place and same size on both sides of the truck.

Nice job, I have also used the overhead projector method as you can precisely get your letters spaced and sized the same way. I think my projector cost me $15-20 at a State dept. surplus. Very handy and has made me some cash. Trevor
