Camaro 4 speed?
I had an idea sitting in class today. i want to switch my truck over to a 4 speed but it seems like stock 4 speeds in these trucks are just so low geared. do you think it would be possible to put an old camaro 4 speed in one of these trucks?

I had a 4 speed out of an 80 Camaro in my truck up until a couple of weeks ago. It worked pretty good even though I only had 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gear. The only problem was that it was turning very high RPMs down the highway at 60 mph because my truck has a steep rear gear. That tranny took a dump in January so I got a 5 speed out of an 84 Camaro and it has been a good transmission. And if you do go with a Camaro 4 speed, you will need either bucket seats or a custom bent shifter.

how much work was it to switch them? my truck is an auto right now. i have another 69 thts a real peice but its a 4 speed so i know i could take some parts from it.

When I bought the truck two years ago it had the Camaro 4 speed in it. It wasn't hard to swap to the 5 speed though. I just had to get a new clutch, cut in hole in the floor, and get my driveshaft shortened and get a longer speedometer cable.

I have a 69 chevy pickup too that is already a 4 speed straight six i was gonna take the main components from that. like the pedals linkage trans crossmember ect.

i put a car 4 speed in my 70 pickup, hurst makes a shifter that fits with the bench seat(just barley). my truck was originally a 3 speed so it just bolted right up.

i used a muncie m20 (wide ratio) trans, that i had sitting around . it works very well with my combination (rear gear ratio,tire size,engine torque,weight,ect.) i'm very happy with it.

Even with the wide ratio box, you are still only looking at a 2.52-1 first gear and a pretty big drop to 1.88-1 in second. It takes quite a bit of rear end gear to make this work in a truck, which is much heavier then the car these transmissions were designed for.....

If you swap out the tailhousing on the Camaro 5 speed with one from a s-10 it will move the shifter forward almost to the stock position...the only issue will be with the speedo gear it will need to be moved to match up with the s-10 rear housing
