I just can't catch a break... My Chev is hurting

Before I left on my road trip I went to an underbody specialist because I had a nasty rattle under my Chev - they put it over the pit and said it was fine.

This week I was cruising along doing 100km per hour when there is a massive bang and there smoke flies out and everything goes pear shaped and fast.
I pull over and look underneath to see diesel pouring out on the bitumen and my baby in pain.

The tail shaft sheared off and when it got loose it took out my fuel lines and a chunk of my gear box/transfer case. Am I up for a new drive line.

Thinking this is her vote for the putting her in the shed for a total rebuild and buy a new car in the mean time argument. I am looking at a new Jeep Wrangler 2 door.

Any advice?

Glad that didnt happen on your trip. As much as I love our old trucks there is something to be said about hopping into a new ride and knowing you're going to get where you wanna go. (most of the time)

Insurance won't fix the shaft but they will fix the damage the shaft did

Nope and not sure how I am going to get home. We have a ute load of gear to cart too. It is going to be expensive if I have to put off work to nurse her back.

Geeze Lara, that could have been really bad (as in getting hurt bad)!
You're one lucky gal! Sorry you broke your truck but look at it this way...
...a good incentive to replace more 40 year old parts!

Ouch, what a mess.

Jeeps are junk but if you're going to buy one... A Wrangler / CJ model is the only one worth the expense.

I didn't know that could even happen on these trucks. The only time I have ever seen that was on a military 5-ton being hammered in reverse in low range. Anyway, sorry that it happened. Try toyota instead of jeep. I have one for my DD. I love it, nice fit and finish and great mileage to boot. Just my .02

X2 - that looks like a total freak thing to happen - I've never seen anything like that before. I'm sorry to hear that, but don't get discouraged over your truck, that looks like something that could have happened to a newer vehicle as well. If you were here, it wouldn't be much to call around to a few junkyards to find the parts to get you home, but I don't suppose there's a lot of salvage yards with Chevrolets over there. I hope that it all works out for you.

Sorry to hear of your truck troubles. Am I understanding you right that you are broke down and not at home yet? What a mess and no one close to help you. Good Luck.

Re: I just can't catch a break... My Chev is hurting

Can anyone tell from the pix if the hole is in the gear box or the transfer case?
I am miles from home and no help in sight. But we will be fine.
Near here a guy lost his leg when a similar thing happened and it flew up through the floor taking him out – a woman apparently had her car catapult when the rear shaft broke digging into the bitumen.
The bright side is I am safe and no major damage was done – just an inconvenience really.

more of a reason to have a drive shaft loop. If you were near me I would come get you and help you with that truck.
Good Luck

Sorry to see that happen Lara.It sucks that the people of OZ don't have as many members as the US.We have a great group here that are on an emergency contact list for just such things.I hope you get her fixed and get home safely.

Re: I just can't catch a break... My Chev is hurting

There is a 4x4 'burb in my local junk yard. I have no clue it's drivetrain or if the drive shafts are still in it, but I can check next weekend when I go up there. If the 4x4 'burbs d-shaft will work for your truck. There's a few more 67-72s, but I don't remember of their 4x4 or 2wd.

I'd be happy to send parts your way though.

A CJ is the only real Jeep. Wranglers (87-up) are plastic junk. The Rubicon has a well-built driveline, but is fugly imo.

I am looking at the 2009 Wrangler.
Apparently they have a habit of catching fire... does anyone know more?

What a clever idea - I wish I had one of those - or even an underbody specialist who listened to me when I said something was wrong.
